    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect and identify an object (coin) consisting of a different metal by generating an electromagnetic field within a region with an electromagnetic speed sensor for detection when the object such as coil is located at a predetermined specific position. SOLUTION: A coin 10 where a center region 12 and a circumferential rim part 14 are formed by another metal is introduced into an automatic vending machine, reaches pot cores 20 and 22 of an electromagnetic sensor on a rail 16, and enters the space between openings 52 and 54, thus preventing light from a light source 44 of a photosensor from entering a photocell 46. When the coin 10 travels and exit the regions of the openings 52 and 54, light beams reach the cell 46 again, the outside or a rim part 14 of the coin 10 crosses the space between the coils 40 and 42 of the electromagnetic sensor at the position, thus causing a change in the electromagnetic field created by the coils 40 and 42 due to the electromagnetic characteristics of a constitution material. By detecting the change, the type, dimension, and area of the material for constituting the coil 10 and the thickness of the coin 10 are detected. The same inspection can be executed when the coin 10 initially reaches a light path or interrupts the light path.

    • A coin sizing circuit and method of operation therefor for use with a coin-operated vending system for distinguishing between various deposited coins as they travel along a predefined path, comprising first and second spaced sensors positioned to detect the movement of a deposited coin thereby, the sensors being responsive to movement of the deposited coin to produce an initial sensing status signal and two further sensing status signals as the coin moves along the predefined path by the sensors and reaches particular positions relative thereto, a memory having predetermined coin sizing data stored therein, and processing circuitry, preferably a programmed microprocessor, operatively connected to the sensors to receive the sensing status signals produced thereby and also operatively connected to the memory to permit the retrieval therefrom of the data stored therein. The processing circuitry is responsive to production of the initial sensing status signal and the first occurring of the two further sensing status signals to establish a time window interval, and is subsequently responsive to production within the time window interval of the second occurring of the two further sensing status signals so as to distinguish a coin whose movement past the sensors effects production within the time window interval of the second occurring of the two further sensing status signals from other coins whose movements past the sensors effect productions of the second occurring of the two further sensing status signals at times outside of the time window interval.

    • PURPOSE: To detect a coin without relying on the interval between the coin and a coin when the coin is within the magnetic field of the sensor coin through the use of a single sensor coin by monitoring the performance characteristic of a circuit where the sensor coin and a current lamp generator are added. CONSTITUTION: The coin detecting means is provided with a circuit means 46 adding a sensor coin means 42 where only a single coil is required and a detecting equipment means 52 which monitors and detects the change of the circuit performance characteristic which is affected by the existence of the coin 54 in the magnetic field of the sensor coil 42 when a current lamp is given to the sensor coil 42 from the lamp generator 48. A time constant characteristic expressing a specified coin 54 existing in the magnetic field of the sensor coil 42 is introduced from the circuit performance characteristic and a different coin 52 unit is discriminated. Thus, it dose not rely on the interval between the coin 54 and the coin 42 is not substantially, and only by the single sensor coil 42, the characteristic expressing the specified coin 54 unit is derived when the coin 54 exists in the magnetic field of the sensor coil 42.

    • A method of examining a coin for determining the validity of its denomination, comprises the steps of moving a coin through a passageway, sensing said moving coin in said passageway with one or more sensors to interact with said moving coin and provide at leasf two values indicative of the said coin, calculating two or more coin features by using said at least two values, determining that said coin features values lie between predetermined minimum and maximum stored values, applying predetermined coefficients of weighted- error to each of said coin features, calculating weighted-error correlation coefficients using two or more of the said coin feature values, and determining validity when the said calculated weighted-error correlation coefficient is above predetermined minimum stored values, or when said coefficient is the maximum of all calculated coefficients.
