    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane contactor for which labor, time and cost of manufacturing can be reduced by simplifying its form and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The membrane contactor 10 includes a housing 12 which has a closed end 14 and an open end 16 and a stack of membrane mats each of which has a plurality of hollow fiber members within the housing. The membrane mats 28 are stacked 26 perpendicularly in a longitudinal direction of the housing. A potting material simultaneously bonds one end of the stack to the closed end and bonds the other end of the stack to a cap and thereby defines an internal chamber 34 and at least one external chamber 36 within the housing. The hollow fiber members extend from the internal chamber 34 through the potting material into the external chambers.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make satisfactorily thin, make sufficiently strong, and specify the shutoff temperature to practical specified temperature or lower by forming a microporous layer film of a shutoff layer by a phase inversion process and forming a strength layer by a drawing process. SOLUTION: A shutoff battery separator 10 is formed by interposing a porous shutoff layer 14 in the center between two microporous strength layer 12, 16. The shutoff layer 14 is formed by a phase inversion process, and the strength layers 12, 16 are formed by a drawing process. The thickness of the separator 10 is preferable to be 1 mil (about 0.0254 mm) or less. The separator 10 can ensure a sufficient strength without sacrificing the thickness. The shutoff layer 14 is melted to block pores at a temperature (shutoff temperature) lower than the temperature which is the melting point of the strength layer 12, 16, and causes thermorunaway. The shutoff temperature of the battery separator is 124 deg.C or lower, and the most preferable shutoff temperature is about 110 deg.C.
