    • A unified messaging interface and method that enables mobile communication device users to initiate the creation messages for a recipient without being required to explicitly specify the type of message to be created. The mobile communication device supports multiple message types, such as voice, text, and picture messages. The user begins providing message content to the communication device by, for example, speaking, entepng text, or clicking a shutter of a camera. The unified messaging interface detects the nature of the content and creates a corresponding type of message. The user can indicate a desire to create and send a message by performing one-click action. The one-click action may include a single button-press on the keypad selection of a single soft key by depressing a button on the keypad or touching the screen of the device, or issuance of a single voice command.

    • Systems and methods are provided for compressing and decompressing session initiation protocol (SIP) messages. A serializer (Figure 4, element 14) and parser (Figure 4, element 16) compress and decode SIP data structures according to a tokenized binary protocol. The compression/decompression protocol uses tokens that represent message elements of the internal data structures that define SIP messages. Tokens may be assigned to message elements based on various design requirements. Some tokens provide sufficient generality to encode any legal SIP message, while others are highly optimized to match the elements found in most common SIP messages. For those elements requiring specific strings, three dictionaries are defined. Two of the dictionaries are static and are never transmitted; the third dictionary is dynamic and contains strings found only in the specific message. Because the message dictionary is transmitted with each message, and contributes to the size of the transmitted message, the message element tokens are designed to reduce the size of the message dictionary to the greatest degree possible. The compression of SIP messages in this manner is stateless in that it does not require knowledge of the characteristics of previous messages.

    • Tickers on communications devices are navigated using a navigation mechanism associated with the communications devices. The navigation mechanisms can permit a user to navigate through content in a ticker or to configure presentation attributes of the ticker. Alternately, the navigation mechanisms can allow the user to initiate secondary actions associated with ticker content, such as launching uniform resource identifiers, launching local applications, accessing remote data or applications, or performing other interactive actions. When the secondary action requires a network connection, the mobile communication device can immediately transmit a request through the network if a network connection is present or can wait until a network connection becomes available. The navigation mechanism can be a keypad of a mobile communication device, soft keys, voice command receivers, motions sensors that respond to motion of the mobile communications device, or other input devices.

    • Advertisements and the timing of the display thereof on tickers of mobile devices are selected based on activity of the mobile devices and bids made by advertisers. Advertisers define conditions of the mobile devices that are to trigger the display of particular advertisements. The advertisers can also bid for priority placement of advertisements and can set spending limits to manage budgets. During use of a mobile device in a mobile communications network, parameter data defining conditions associated with the mobile device and the operation thereof is generated. The mobile device also generates event data defining events or activity of the mobile device or the associated mobile user. The parameter data and the event data are used by an advertising system of the mobile communications network to select an advertisement and the timing of the display of the advertisement, respectively. Any priority given to particular advertisements based on bids made by advertisers is also used to select the advertisement.
