    • Apparatus for depositing fluid on a material in a predetermined design includes an intaglio plate having at least one recess in one surface thereof corresponding with the design. The plate has passage means for directing fluid through the plate into the recess. In use, the plate is moved into sealing contact with the material and a fluid injector unit is operated to direct fluid through the passage in the plate and into the recess. A resilient gasket member is interposed between the fluid injector unit and the plate. The gasket member has a rib thereon which projects into a distribution groove formed on one side of the plate. The surfaces of the rib and surfaces defining the distribution groove have a sealing contact therebetween. Moreover, the construction is such that when the material and plate are moved into sealing contact, the resilient rib is forced in such a manner as to reduce the volume of the fluid distribution channel and when the plate and material are moved relatively apart, the resilient material releases causing an increase in the volume of the fluid distribution chamber. This increase in the volume of the fluid distribution chamber creates a suction effect acting to draw fluid away from the recess. The resilient gasket also has a portion which seals against the housing of the injector unit.
