    • An object-oriented development system includes a development system having a language compiler (320) with one or more class libraries (365) for generating computer applications (305) with improved event handling capability. Methods (400) of the present invention include constructing C++ classes (450, 460) having response functions -- C++ class methods which process specific system messages of interest. More particularly, a C++ class includes a registry object (410) -- an object which associates the message of interest with a particular response function. The registry object includes a C++ template definition, whereby the object includes a "generic" function, that is, one which is not tied to any specific parameter type. In this manner, the message-response functions of the development system do not require compiler-specific extensions or unsafe casting operations.

    • A computer-based training system (CBT) has one or more Application Translation Units (ATUs 340), a message engine (350), and a script engine (320). For one or more target application (360) of interest, an ATU is provided for processing events specific to that application, thereby trapping events and translating them into abstract messages or "meta-messages" for conveying information about a particular event to the system. A general operating system ATU is also provided for trapping general system events. Translated event messages are processed by event handlers (450). System or application-specific messages which are not of interest are simply allowed to pass through. The individual handlers dispatch their respective messages to the script engine (320), which includes instructions for directing the activity of the target application(s). The script engine (320), in turn, acts upon an incoming message. The dispatched message triggers appropriate action (as specified by instructions within the script).

A shared object or resource is accessed according to the information retrieved from the corresponding logical lock file, data retrieval being improved by reading an amount of data equal to a previously memorized file size plus a predictive amount.

    • A system including an operator-machine interface is described for enabling an operator readily to make a selection from a large number of options in the control of a process or the creation of a product. The options are stored on a computer disc as models or solutions together with associated scale values and rejection constraints of attributes of the model. The interface presents the operator with a plurality of graphics scales (301A-301E) each having a sliding member which can be manipulated by the operator to select a desired value on the scale. The interface also presents corresponding rejection constraint items (302) to the operator for entry of a binary reply. The system then selects those models having rejection constraints matching the input binary replies and which have scale values related to the selected values by a predetermined correlation function. Having presented the selected models to the operator, a desired one of these models is utilised by the system to control the final form of a product.
