    • A flexible sleeve (5) for an air spring terminates in end portions (25, 26) which define a pair of open ends. The sleeve (5) has inner and outer layers (13, 14) of a flexible material with a plurality of reinforcement elements (21, 22) disposed within the materials with the reinforcement elements extending throughout the end portions. Inner and outer layers of the end portions (25, 26) are joined to the inner and outer layers (13, 14) of the sleeve, by non-overlapping joints (27, 28) with the inner and outer layers of the end portions (25, 26) having a higher modulus of elasticity than the inner and outer layers (13, 14) of the sleeve.

    • A vehicle suspension system has a combination air spring/damper mounted between spaced first and second components of a vehicle. The damper has a fluid cylinder attached to the first component and a piston rod connected to the second component. The air spring has a piston mounted on and surrounding the damper cylinder, and an end plate with intervening flexible bellows forming an air chamber where the end plate is secured to the second component, but at a separate location from the attachment of the piston rod to distribute the loading forces at the points of attachment. A flexible sealing sleeve extends between the piston rod and an end plate opening through which the piston rod extends. A rigid canister is mounted on the end plate and extends about the flexible bellows and has a sealing skirt at a lower end which engages the damper cylinder.

    • An air spring has a pair of axially spaced end members (4,5) and an intervening elastomeric flexible sleeve (7) extending therebetween and forming a fluid pressure chamber (16) . An annular cla mp ring (15) has at least one radially extending rib (25) formed on an inner sealingly surface (22) which radially align with at least one concave recess (38,39) formed on a sealing surface (37) of one of the end members. The end member also has at least one radially extending rib (43,44) which aligns with at least one rec ess formed (26,27) in the clamp ring sealing surface. The rib an d recess formed on the clamp ring are longer and deeper that the ribs and recesses on the sealing surface of the end member to proprovide a more aggressive clamping action on the outer surface ofthe flexible sleeve than the clamping action on the inner surface or innerliner of the sleeve.

    • A pneumatic actuator (1) adapted for placement between a pair of spaced members (2,3) for controlling relative movement between said members is formed of two different hardness plastic materials and includes a rigid base (6) and a flexible top member (7) forming an internal air chamber (19) therebetween. The top member is movable between collapsed and expanded positions by pressurized introduced into the internal chamber for relative movement of the spaced members. The base has a sidewall (9) terminating in a peripheral edge (10) on which the top member is sealingly secured by a hot welded joint. A central portion (21) of the top member has a raised thickened portion which engages one of the spaced members(3). A stop (30) is located within the internal chamber to maintain the central portion of the top member above the peripheral edge of the base to prevent contact of the spaced member with the sealed joint when the top member is in the collapsed position. An air passage (15) is formed in the base to enable the pressurized air to enter the internal chamber.
