摘要： A system is provided for matching a new hole on an overlying member (24) with an existing hole in an underlying member (20). With a magnet placed in the existing hole, an indicator device (30) having an internal cavity, an outer boundry and a ferrous ball freely movable within the internal cavity is slid across the surface of the overlying member and in engagement therewith. When the ferrous ball overlies the magnet, a position on the overlying member aligned with the existing hole in the underlying member is thereby located. Thereafter, the indicator device (30) is removed from the overlying member and replaced by a drill guide (56). The drill guide (56) is used to locate a drill to cut a hole through the overlying member coincident with the existing hole in the underlying member.

摘要： A process for manufacturing a metallized substrate using the island coating method, includes depositing a coating layer containing a radiation curable non-volatile film former. The coated part is then vacuum metallized to form the metal islands of the present invention. A layer of clear resinous protective dielectric topcoat containing a radiation curable non-volatile film former is then deposited to completely cover the layer of metal islands while maintaining the aesthetic properties of the metallizing island coating system at a reduced cost and with minimal variability among parts.

The members are precipitation, heat-treatable, aluminum alloys which are age formed. The resulting member is formed to the desired contour and, simultaneously, is heat treated to reduce residual stresses while improving its strength characteristics. The invention is particularly concerned with a new tool contour prediction method which is based upon the relationship, for a particular aluminum alloy, of the strain retained in a part after it has been subjected to an applied strain while constrained to a desired shape, then released after being heat treated in an autoclave or furnace.

摘要： A method is disclosed for developing the contours of forming tools for fabricating metal members of complex shape such as wing skin and fuselage panels for aircraft. A computer simulation is performed of the age forming process on a geometrical representation of a member having the material properties of a desired metal member. The age forming process includes the steps of: a) overforming an unformed member in a tool having a contour of smaller curvature than the contour of the desired member; b) constraining the unformed member in the overformed condition; c) applying a thermal aging cycle to the member; d) cooling the constrained member following the thermal aging cycle; and e) releasing the constrained member from the condition imparted by step (b) and allowing it to spring back to a dimensionally stable condition which defines the desired member having a surface contour of complex shape. From the simulation, the contour of smaller curvature in step (a) to produce the desired metal member following step (e) is determined.

摘要： An improved air-cooled aviation engine includes a compact combustion chamber having an intake valve opening, an exhaust valve opening, and a generally elliptical shape. The elliptical shape has a major axis and a minor axis, with the major axis intersecting both the intake valve opening and the exhaust valve opening. In some examples, the major axis is the same length or shorter than a diameter of a cylinder bore of the engine, and the minor axis is smaller than the major axis. Combustion is thus constrained to a smaller area than that of the cylinder bore.
