The image intensifier device also includes an image intensifier tube which includes a photocathode being positioned to receive an image formed by the lens. The photocathode generates photoelectrons depending on the light image of a scene. The image intensifier tube includes a microchannel plate having an input surface that includes a photocathode. The microchannel plate receives photoelectrons generated by the photocathode, and generates secondary electrons. An electron detector receives the secondary electrons generated by the microchannel plate, and generates an intensified image of a scene.

The second emission layer is selected to achieve at least one of an increase a secondary electron emission efficiency rate and a decrease in gain deterioration as a function of a time. An upper electrode is formed on the upper surface of the substrate, and a lower electrode is formed on the lower surface of the substrate.
