    • An invention is afforded for providing security for a protected network resource. The system includes a network access apparatus in communication with a receiver that receives signals from a remote source. The network access apparatus is capable of collecting current microprint data for the receiver, which is a plurality of values based on data values received at the receiver over a predefined period of time, for example, forty-five seconds. The system also includes an authentication computer in communication with the network access apparatus. The authentication computer has access to an LSDF for the receiver, which is a plurality of values based on data values received at the receiver over a predefined period of time, for example, a twenty-four hour period of time. In operation the network access apparatus provides current microprint data for the receiver to the authentication computer, and the authentication computer compares the current microprint data to the LSDF for the receiver to authenticate an access request.

    • A verification device for a security thread (142) embedded within currency paper includes two or more sensor channels (102, 104), each channel comprising a sensor plate (106, 108) and a guard plate (110, 112) disposed adjacent to one another. The sensor plate and guard plate of one channel are in a planar relationship with the sensor plate and guard plate of all other channels. A transisstor (116, 118) has its base (120, 122) connected to the sensor plate and its emitter (124, 126) connected to the guard plate, thereby effectively removing any stray capacitance between the sensor and guard plates. The output of the transistor at its emitter (124, 126) is indicative of the amount of the electrical charge on the sensor plate. Signal processing electronics disposed after the transistor convert the sensor plate capacitance into an electrical signal whose pulse width is proportional to the amount of sensor plate capacitance. A valid currency having a security thread embedded therein passes by a sensor plate and varies the amount of capacitance of the plate. The signal processing electronics is responsive to this variation in sensor plate capacitance and provides a signal indicative of the valid security thread.

    • A document verification device detects the presence of a metal security thread embedded in a document such as currency paper. The device includes a sensor pad arrangement and corresponding signal processing electronics. The arrangement includes a single central sensing pad flanked by an array of twenty-seven pairs of outer pads. Each pair of outer pads in the array is electrically connected together. The document to be verified is transported with respect to the sensor pad arrangement such that the wide edge of the document is the leading edge. As the thread passes over the array, a pattern is sequenced throughout the pads fast enough such that, at a point in time, the thread will bridge the central sensing pad with a pair of outer two pads first having the positive voltage level portion of the square wave signal applied thereto, and then later the thread will bridge the central sensing pad with the same pair of outer pads now having the negative voltage level portion of the square wave signal applied thereto. The electronics senses the signal coupled to the sensing pad and interprets a valid security thread as being present in the currency from certain characteristics of the sensed signal.
