    • 1517741 Contact pressure adjustment FALCONBRIDGE NICKEL MINES Ltd 18 June 1975 [2 July 1974] 25903/75 Heading H1N In an electric switch wherein two contacts 21, 22 can be bridged by a switch blade 37 sliding between them to close the switch, in order to adjust the pressure of the contacts on the blade at least one 22 of the two contacts is movable in a direction towards or away from the other of the two contacts under the control of a spring 20 and the mechanism 35 operating the switch blade, the force produced on the contact or contacts by the mechanism depending on the resistance met by the switch blade when it moves into or out of contact with the contacts. In a first embodiment one contact 22 is at a first end of a pivoted lever 15 between whose other end and a fixed arm 11 carrying the other contact 21 is connected a spring 20 and a linkage comprising three links 27, 28, 29, on the middle link 28 of which is fixed a cylinder in which slides a piston connected to the switch blade. During operation of the switch when the switch blade encounters resistance in sliding between the contacts the linkage is deformed as a reaction to this resistance and the contacts are moved apart to allow freer movement of the blade against the bias of the spring 20. An insulating baffle 38 is mounted on the end of the switch blade to prevent arcing on contact breaking. In a second embodiment both contacts are movable, Fig. 6, not shown. In a third embodiment the switch contacts are attached respectively to two arms of a U-shaped yoke, there being a pivot between the arms to allow them to move relatively apart or together under the action of a linkage connected between the ends of the arms and carrying on the central link the cylinder of the switch blade operating mechanism, Figs. 7, 9, not shown.

    • 1483572 Electromagnetic switches AUTOMATIC SWITCH CO 9 Oct 1975 [29 Jan 1975] 41371/75 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] A switch which when its coil 98 is pulsed transfers a load from a normal supply source to an emergency supply source has phase contact set 16 for connection of the normal supply terminals 22 to the load terminals 26, a phase contact set 17 for connection of the emergency supply terminals 24 to the load terminals 26, and a neutral make before break change-over contact arrangement 28, 31 arranged so that on switching the neutral contacts close first so that both neutral connections are made then the contact set 16 are opened, then the contact set 17 are closed and then the neutral of the normal source is disconnected. The movable contacts 19 of the set 16 are mounted on an insulator plate 51 secured between members 48, 50 which are pivoted at 49 and also have secured between them a second insulating plate 52 on whch the movable contacts 21 of the set 17 are mounted. When the operating coil 98 is pulsed a plunger armature 99 is pulled into the coil and by means of a link 100 and rotates a weight 101 about its pivot 102. The weight 101 has projecting pins ends 106 engaging in a slot 109 in member 50 and in a slot 108 in a similar pivoted member 73 having an arm 75 connected by a lost-motion bar 76 to the neutral contact assembly which has biasing springs 94. The inertia of the weight 101 carries it to the Fig. 14 position the contacts 32, 33 having closed first (Fig. 11, not shown) before contacts 18, 19 open (Fig. 12, not shown), then contacts 20, 21 close (Fig. 13, not shown) before the Fig. 14 position is reached with contacts 29, 30 open.

    • In a high amperage switching apparatus comprising multiple, spaced apart, stationary first terminals, each in interruptable circuit communication with corresponding multiple, spaced apart, stationary second terminals, said communication being by movable knife type circuit interrupting means pivotably attached to each second terminal such that it will contact the corresponding first terminal at some point in the pivot arc, the improvement comprising removably and conductively attaching to at least one stationary first terminal, at least one primary sacrificial, bimetallic contact, having highly conductive lower attachment section and highly resistant contact tip and removably and conductively attaching to at least one corresponding movable circuit interrupting means at least one secondary sacrificial bimetallic contact, being comprised of multiple laminate highly conductive metal fingers backed by a spring, compression laminate, having a high resistant metal tip, said primary and secondary sacrificial bimetallic contacts being so attached to said first terminal and interrupting means that under high amperage current, when closing said switch, contact is made between the resistant tips of said primary and secondary sacrificial contacts prior to the initiation of arcing between the first terminal and the movable interrupting means, contact between the sacrificial contacts being maintained throughout the closing of the switch and when opening said switch, contact is maintained between the primary and secondary sacrificial contacts until the interrupting means is so far removed fro the first terminal that arcing therebetween may not occur.
