    • IMPROVEMENTS IN SOLENOID DASHPOT PEDAL ACTUATOR ASSEMBLIES There is disclosed a solenoid-dashpot assembly for actuating the foot pedals of a player piano. A solenoid having an armature shaft extending beyond the coil area of the solenoid receives a piston element, which, in turn, has an O-ring which co-acts with a dashpot cylinder. Constricted air passage elements are formed in the piston element and are provided with relatively large air passages which have mufflers thereon so that no sound is made when air ingresses or egresses through these constricted passages due to actuation and deactuation of the solenoid. To silence both end part of travel of the solenoid armature, the solenoid is mounted above a base plate on a mounting bracket and the solenoid armature carries a pad extending from a side opposite the dashpot. The base plate has an adjustable pad thereon opposite the pad on the solenoid armature so that on actuation and deactuation of the solenoid, there are no noise generating, hard surface to hard surface contacts at either end point of solenoid armature movement. These elements are provided so as to enable the solenoid dashpot assembly to more closely approximate the action of the piano player in the depressing the pedals of the piano, and at the same time, be almost completely silent.

    • There is disclosed a circuit for controlling the expression of an electronically controlled keyboard instrument and is an improvement on the circuit disclosed in application Ser. No. 680,996. The circuit works on the principle that by switching a solenoid on and off at a rapid rate and then varying the time on versus the time off, the energy supplied to the solenoid varies and therefore the striking force of the piano is changed. In accordance with the present invention, precise control over the width of the pulses is achieved by first setting a set voltage level and then adding thereto increments of set voltage according to a binary weighting. These voltages are then added and compared with a triangular voltage in a comparator. Both the up ramp portion and the down ramp portion of the triangular waveform are utilized and compared against the sum voltages. The pulse width of the comparator output is thus a function of the intersection of the ramp voltage, both up and down ramps, with the sum voltage. By varying the sum voltage in digital increments the width of the pulses is varied and these pulses which are supplied to the solenoid thus have the power or energy of the solenoid varied to vary the expression effects on the playback of the piano, for example.

    • A musical instrument is disclosed which is capable of being operated in either of two different ways-through the use of a rotary record member, or through the manual manipulation of individual keys. The instrument disclosed includes a windchest used to supply air to either of two different principal valves, each of which is capable of being manipulated so as to set up resonance within an associated resonance chamber. Secondary valves are provided for varying the acoustically effective dimensions of the resonating chambers. All of the valves have actuators which extend into an area of the instrument capable of serving as a holder for the record member. When the record member is inserted in this holder and rotated cams on the record member engage the actuators so as to cause the production of a desired series of notes. Keys on the instrument are capable of being manually manipulated so as to cause the movement of levers into engagement with the actuators when no record member is present.
