摘要： An improved sub-sonic cartridge for small arms containing a bullet whose Calibers (length/diameter) value is 6.0 or greater, which imparts to the bullet substantially greater kinetic energy than smaller and lighter sub-sonic bullets. The greater kinetic energy of the bullet aids in cycling the action of semi and fully automatic firearms as well as imparts greater kinetic energy to the target upon impact. The bullet incorporates an fin unit on the aft portion of the bullet; the aft fin unit is rotationally independent of the rotational state of the bullet in flight. The fin unit forces the Center of Pressure rearward of the Center of Gravity for added stability and accuracy in flight. Volume vacant of propellant within the cartridge shell may be occupied with a durable and heat resistant material to aid in consistent and reliable propellant burn when fired.

An endcap coupled to the front end of the case is adapted to retain the projectile entirely within the case. A primer is positioned along the longitudinal axis towards the base end of the case. A primer support is coupled to the base end of the case and is adapted to support the primer within the case. A groove is located on the interior surface of the primer support into which the primer expands under pressure during firing. Under firing pressure, the primer is deformed to create a retaining ring that locks the primer to the primer support after the pressure is released. The cartridge assembly includes at least one obturating lip seal to seal at least one of the endcap or the primer support to the case.

The cartridge advantageously includes fixed supports defined by elongated ridges fitted between the nose fairing and the casing and extending to the aft section of the projectile to provide support therefor, wherein spaces are defined between the fixed supports. A propellant charge is disposed within the casing and is in contact with the cylindrical aft section of the projectile, and is disposed within the spaces of the fixed supports.

The cartridge also includes a slidable rear support disposed at the aft section of the projectile, the support being defined by a shim having a plurality of radial extensions thereby defining spaces between the radial extensions, a propelling charge disposed within the casing which is in contact with an inner surface of a cylindrical portion of the cartridge casing and an inner surface of the base, wherein the propellant charge is axially disposed on both sides of the shim, the spaces providing powder communication through the shim.

Penetrator 32 and sabot 36 are positioned within control tube 24 with obturator band 46 and retaining groove 36 of aft bourrelet 36 positioned within control tube 24. The inner surface of outer casing 12 has a longitudinal groove 50 formed in it along which groove 48 outer casing 12 splits when round 10 is fired. A front seal 20 closes the front end of casing 12 and a rear seal 22 closes the rear end of casing 12. A hollow cylindrical control tube 24 is secured to rear seal 22 so that control tube 24 is symmetric with axis 18. Three bolts 52, 53, 54 which are made of a material having a yield strength greater than the maximum stress to which the bolts 52, 53, 54 are subjected when round 10 is fired interconnect front and rear seals 20, 22. After round 10 is fired, bolts 52, 53, 54 return to their initial length, so that the length of the cartridge case returns to its initial length, and seals 20, 22 confine the casing 12 between seals 20, 22 to maintain the integrity of the spent cartridge case 76.
