摘要： ALKYLARYL HYDROPHOBICALLY MODIFIED CELLULOSE ETHERS Cellulose ethers are disclosed which have sufficient nonionic substitution to render them water soluble and which are further modified with a C10 to C24 long chain alkylaryl group in an amount between 0.2% by weight and the amount which makes them less than 1% by weight soluble in water. Hydroxyethylcellulose is a preferred water soluble cellulose ether for modification according to the invention. These products exhibit substantially improved viscosifying effects compared to their unmodified cellulose ether counterparts, and provide good leveling and sag resistance in latex paints. Preferred alkylaryl groups are nonylphenyl, dodecylphenyl, and dinonylphenyl. Included are cellulose ethers with spacer groups of various lengths between the alkylaryl group and the connecting group to the cellulose molecule.

摘要： Polysaccharide aldehydes having the general structuresuch as starch, cellulose and gum aldehydes, are useful for imparting wet, dry, or temporary wet strength to paper. They are prepared by a non-oxidative method which involves reacting the polysaccharide base, in the presence of alkali, with a derivatizing acetal reagent having the general structureand then hydrolyzing the acetal by adjusting the pH to less than 7, preferably 2-4. R is (CH 2 ) n or a divalent aromatic group and n is 0 or greater; R', R 6 , and R 7 are hydrogen or an organic group; R 2 , R5, and R 8 are (CH 2 ) m with m being 1-6; R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen or a lower alkyl; Y is an anion; Z is an organic group capable of reacting with the polysaccharide base to form an ether derivative and selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, ethylenically unsaturated group, halohydrin, and halogen; R", if present, is a divalent organic group containing no reactive substituents; and A and A' are lower alkyls or together form at least a 5-membered cyclic acetal.

Cellulose ethers, and processes for making films from.-Water-soluble sulphonated cellulose derivatives are obtained by causing cellulose in the form of an alkali compound or in the presence of an alkaline agent, to react with an aralkylhalide-sulphonic acid. In examples, mercerized cellulose is treated with alcoholic caustic soda solution, and to the mixture is added sodium benzylchloride - para - sulphonate dissolved in alcohol and the mass kneaded at 50-60‹ C.; mercerized cellulose is kneaded with caustic potash solution, the mass then pressed, and mixed with sodium benzylchloride-ortho-sulphonate while heating; mercerized cellulose is soaked with pyridine and then stirred with sodium xylylchloride-sulphonate. The products can be separated by conversion into their calcium or barium salts which are insoluble in water and from which the free acids can be obtained. Because of their incombustibility the products are suitable for impregnating textiles and for the manufacture of fireproof films; when used for impregnating, the fabric is soaked with an aqueous solution of the compound and a salt of a heavy metal, aluminium &c. added in order to precipitate the corresponding salt of the compound on the fibre.

摘要： The present invention provides solid-phase saccharide dyes. The dyes are bisboronic acids covalently bonded to a solid substrate. The dyes selectively conjugate with saccharides, particularly glucose, and register a signal. The signal is proportional to the quantity of saccharide. Thus, the dyes of the present invention are useful for measuring and monitoring saccharide levels, particularly in biological fluids such as blood.
