    • A hydraulic shock absorber including inner and outer tubes telescopically fitted together and an orifice variable in response to relative movement of the inner and outer tubes. A large diameter tubular holder is disposed coaxially around an upper portion of the outer tube to provide a space between the outer tube and the holder, the space being divided by a tubular partition membrane disposed coaxially in the space into a high-pressure gas chamber located outside of the membrane and a low-pressure gas chamber located inside of the membrane and communicating with an upper space within the outer tube. The shock absorber is of the hydraulically and pneumatically operated type, is simple in structure, and can be assembled with ease while maintaining a desired degree of performance. When the shock absorber is at the end of the extension stroke, there is a sufficient length of span between an outer tube sliding portion and an inner tube sliding portion between which the variable orifice is located so that even when the shock absorber is subjected to lateral bending forces, the orifice clearance is prevented from being varied or deformed, to ensure reliable and smooth operation of the shock absorber.

    • The shock absorber is of the type comprising a cylinder and piston containing hydraulic fluid and wherein the piston has fluid bypass holes so that fluid can pass from one side of the piston to the other within the cylinder. Tapered pins at one end of the cylinder are receivable in the fluid bypass holes when the piston approaches the one end. A cage assembly in the form of guide rods supports the pins and passes through guide bores in the piston so that the pins and piston rotate as a unit and the pins are always held in alignment with the fluid bypass holes.

    • A two-stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber incorporating two pneumatic (air) pressure chambers, a high air pressure chamber and a low pressure (air) chamber, separated by a hydraulic fluid (oil) pressure chamber. The oil chamber contains an orifice and metering pin, which orifice and metering pin control the rate of collapse of the low pressure air chamber. It also contains a second orifice and metering pin which control the rate of collapse of the high pressure air chamber. Both metering pins are preprogrammed so as to interact with each other and effect a nearly constant load throughout the stroke of the shock absorber, even under transient loading conditions.

    • The present invention relates to artificial limbs generally and to joints for the same. In particular, the present invention provides hydraulic functional units (35), generally classified as damping devices as connected between artificial limbs whereby to enable movement of artificial joints to closely correspond with natural human movement. In the provision of realistic joints, as used in prosthetic limbs, an important aspect in attempting to achieve a realistic movement is to provide a different operating characteristic to the joint when under load. Indeed, one of the more important characteristics of an artificial leg for achieving a natural-looking walking gait correspond with those of a so called stabilised knee, i.e. a knee which resists flexion when under load, that is when it is bearing at least some of the weight of the amputee. In accordance with the invention, there is provided hydraulic damper control elements for prostheses which utilize a pressure differential due to the presence a fluid flow as a direct control input for a at least one hydraulic valve (47). The valve can comprise a vortex flow arrangement (47f ) to cause fluid flow to circulate about an aperture. The valve can comprise a moveable element which abuts a resiliently mounted element which reduces the size of an aperture as the force increases.
