    • 1399245 Tensioning chains UNDERGROUND MINING MACHINERY Ltd 30 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 30641/71 Heading B8B [Also in Division E1] An apparatus for tensioning the endless chains L of a mineral face scraper conveyer A, or the endless chain M of a plough B, comprises a device CH or DH detachably mounted in the transmission between a drive motor CF or DF, and a chain drive drum CE or DE, to rotate the drum at a speed slower than the normal drive speed, to produce slack in the chains between the drum and an associated device O or N for locking the chains, to facilitate chain servicing. The tensioning device CH or DH comprises a casing 1 securable by bolts into the main transmission, whereby a shaft 2 of the device is removably coupled into the drum drive transmission through a splined shaft 5 and a splined socket 6. The shaft 2 includes a gear 3 drivable by an hydraulic motor 72 through a pinion 7 once a gear 8 is slideably selected, the sliding motion causing electrical de-energization of the main drive motor for the drum. A pressure gauge in the hydraulic drive system for the motor 72 indicates the tension on the chains, a pressure relief valve limits the tension and check valves hold the motor in a tensioning condition once the pressure supply to the motor is neutralized. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the splined shaft and socket portions of the tension device shaft are flexibly coupled to allow for misalignment. In another embodiment, the hydraulic motor is short circuited and idles during normal drum drive since there is no provision for disengaging the gears. In a further embodiment, the tension device is arranged on the side of the drum oppsite to the drive transmission whereby the device splined shaft directly engages a socket in the drum. In a final embodiment the auxiliary motor directly drives the drum and the gearing is omitted.
