[Class 114] In variable-pitch screw propellers wherein the pitch varying mechanism is operated by a friction disc, discs of stepped form are employed and the coacting member is mounted to be disengaged after a definite pitch adjustment has been effected. The pitch changing shaft 3 carries a bevel wheel 5 engaging a bevel 6 on a sleeve 7, which is mounted on a non- rotatable rod 8 and which carries a projection 13 passing through a disc 11 so as to be rotated thereby. The disc is mounted like a nut on a screwed extension of the rod 11, and is disposed between two stepped faces on a member 4 which is slidable axially. When positioned for one of the steps to be engaged by the disc 11, the latter is rotated to operate the shaft 3 and also slides so that after a certain number of revolutions it is clear of the step. The member 4 is connected by a linkage with a pitch indicator 19.

[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 24, 1936.] [Class 114] A variable-pitch airscrew wherein the blades are attached to sleeves rotatably mounted in sockets in a two-part hub, such sleeves have cam projections extending longitudinally with respect to the propeller axis which are engaged by a longitudinal sliding member for pitch adjustment. The parts b , b are bolted together and within the complete sockets then formed threaded sleeves k are freely mounted on ball bearings. The blades are screwed into the sleeves and held by wedges x, y. The inner ends of the sleeves have cams m. Surfaces m1, m2 thereof contacting with inclined surfaces n1, n2 of a displaceable slide consisting of two parts n , n , which are coupled by bolts o that also pass to the adjusting rings. The end of the parts n2 are connected to a disc u which is under the influence of a spring z. The correct adjustment of the apparatus is obtained by using a distance piece p between the surfaces n , n .

    • 441,203. Screw propellers. PIAGGIO & CO. SOC. ANON., 2, Via Petrarca, Genoa, Italy. July 10, 1934, No. 20263. Convention date, June 12. [Class 114] A variable - pitch screw propeller has its blades mounted in the hub sockets 3 and each blade 4 has screwed thereto a sleeve 5 which supports a ball race 8 taking centrifugal thrust and other races 9 and 10 adapted to take the journal thrust. The assemblage is completed by a collar 12 screwed into the socket to hold the thrust bearing and by a ring 6 screwed to the sleeve and having conical jamming surfaces engaging corresponding cones 7 on the blade root. Sleeve 5 has an off-set pin 14 connected by links 15 with the arms of a nut 17 slidably mounted on a screw 20 supported in an extension of the boss. The screw 20 carries a bevel wheel 21 which engages a bevel 22 and thence through worm gearing 24 is coupled by a shaft 25, coupling 26 and shaft 27 to the actuating mechanism by a pinion 28. This pinion meshes with the internally toothed crown wheel 29 and with the externally toothed wheel 30, both of which are supported coaxially on the hub. The crown 29 and wheel 30 have annular rims upon which brakes 31, 32 may be imposed by the lever 35. When either the crown 29 or wheel 30 are stopped the pinion 28 receives a motion and the shaft 27 and the pitch-changing gears are thereby operated. Provided in the transmission is a coupling 26 which is adapted to cut out the drive when either of the end pitch positions of the blades is reached. For this purpose two ratchet wheels 36, 37 are mounted on a flange 40 on the transmission shaft 27 ; the ratchets are oppositely disposed and are engaged by corresponding pawls 38, 39 which are pivoted eccentrically so that centrifugal force normally tends to keep the teeth in engagement. An external slider 26 is provided which has abutments adapted to contact with the enlarged end 41 of one of the pivot points 14. When the end 41 engages an abutment, the slider 26 is moved endwise and cam surfaces thereon press against and cause one or other of the pawls 38 or 39 to be disconnected from the corresponding wheels 36, 37 and so disconnect the transmission. For the purpose of giving an indication of the pitch setting the wheels 29 and 30 have two toothed sectors with which pinions 42, 43 mesh and these are by a differential gear united to form the drive for the shaft 54 which receives a motion corresponding to the pitch setting. Stops 62 and 63 are provided on an indicating dial to limit the displacment of the index finger 61, such finger being frictionally mounted upon its spindle.
