    • A novel and useful apparatus for and method of communicating time related messages between multiple devices wherein each device operates using a different time base. The invention can be applied to multi-mode cellular handsets that implement multiple radio access technologies (RATs). Messages communicated between the RATs are time synchronized using a common time base that is shared among all the RATs in the system. The creation of the shared time base is based on an interrupt signal referred to as a “sync event”. The interrupt signal is generated by at least one of the devices and received by all the other devices. The local time is stored in a snapshot register and is used by each respective device as the basis to perform conversions between local and common time, common time being the time base that is shared by all the devices in the system. This ‘synchronizes’ the devices since they all took a snapshot of their respective local timers at substantially the same time.

    • A cell searching apparatus and method in an asynchronous mobile communication system allocates an adjacent SCG to each base station according to adjacent degrees. When a mobile terminal is powered on, the mobile terminal receives PSCs and SSCs from the base stations. Multiple searching of SSCs is then performed based on each slot synchronization followed by a frame synchronization and SCG detection through the first searched SSC. If the detected SCG is not an SCG of a base station to which the mobile terminal belongs, the cell searching apparatus detects an SCG with a large size among the adjacent SCGs and detects an SC by using the greatest SCG. Frame synchronization and SCG detection are therefore quickly performed in a cell searching, resulting in a quick search searching.

    • According to the invention a mobile station (10) obtains the time delays of transmissions (T0, T1, T2) from a set of base stations in reaching the mobile station, determines a difference (t1, t2 ) between a group of the time delays and a reference time delay and transmits the time delay differences to base stations (14, 16) in the set having transmissions with time delays in the group via at least one link that is specific to the mobile station. A base station (14) receives the difference (t1) between its own transmission time delay and the reference time delay, compares the difference with a time range and corrects the timing of its transmissions if the difference is outside of the time range.
