    • By employing AFC range extension, a high frequency communication device (100) can use a low cost, low accuracy crystal (119) in its reference oscillator (118). AFC range extension involves varying receive bandwidth of the communication device (100) to facilitate AFC or automatic frequency control. In particular, the receive bandwidth is set to a first, wide setting for AFC acquisition purposes (208). Frequency error associated with a received AFC signal is determined (212) and receive reception is adjusted (218) to reduce frequency error in the communication device (100). Once the frequency error is below a predetermined threshold (214), the receive bandwidth is set to a second setting different from the first setting for normal reception (220).

    • A method and apparatus for controlling frequency synchronization in a frequency correction feedback loop of a radio telephone. A processor in a frequency update controller ascertains increment/decrement values pro-proportionally related to confidence levels representing a ratio that a likelihood probability of estimated offset frequecies of an input carrier signal are accurate in proportion to a likelihood probability that the estimated offset frequencies are inaccurate. The processor adds or subtracts the value to a counter depending on its sign. When the counter reaches a certain predefined positive number, the counter is decremented by this number and the processor increases the frequency of a reference oscillator frequency. When the counter reaches a certain predefined negative number, the counter is incremented by the absolute value of the negative number and the processor decreases the frequency of the reference oscillator frequency.

    • PURPOSE: A signal processing circuit for a tuner is provided to prevent degradation of demodulation property by performing a signal processing according to a frequency drift between an IF(Intermediate Frequency) and a carrier frequency. CONSTITUTION: A wave detector(16) is operated based on a clock signal from a second local oscillator and detects an IF signal. A frequency drift detector(40) detects drift of a carrier of the IF signal and a frequency of the clock signal and outputs an IF frequency drift signal. The frequency drift detector includes a detector BPF(Band Pass Filter)(42), a frequency counter(44), and an IF frequency drift signal output unit(46). The detector BPF detects a carrier component of the IF signal. The frequency counter counts the frequency of the carrier of the IF signal passing through the detector BPF based on the clock signal. The IF frequency drift signal output unit outputs an IF frequency drift signal according to a difference between the counted frequency and the frequency of the clock signal.
