    • An antenna suitable for mounting upon vehicles, vessels or aircraft for communication via satellites comprises a conductive ground plane and a radiator element in the form of a conductor helically wound to define a frusto-conical shape with the ground plane as its base. The conductor may be formed upon a dielectric substrate in the shape of a truncated cone. The dimensions of the antenna element are selected so that the pitch angle of the radiator element varies between a minimum of about 6 degrees and a maximum of about 8 degrees. The required pitch angle may be achieved when the cone angle of the frusto-conical shape is between 5 degrees and 20 degrees and the mean diameter of the frusto-conical shape is between 0.3 and 0.47 of a mean operational wavelength predetermined for the antenna. The length of the radiator element is selected to be the minimum needed to sustain a wave. Optimum performance with compact size is attained when the ground plane is about two thirds of the operational wavelength, the cone angle is about 10 degrees and the maximum diameter of the frusto-conical shape is equal to about one half of the wavelength.

    • A mechanically steerable antenna suitable for mobile earth stations of satellite communication systems comprises a support member mounted upon a base member and an active antenna element or array of elements mounted upon the support member. The antenna element or array of elements is rotatable about its boresight relative to the support member. The support member itself is rotatable in azimuth relative to the base member. The rotation axis of the antenna element or array of elements and the rotation axis of the support member are mutually inclined by a predetermined angle corresponding to the mean elevation angle of the satellite. The antenna includes drive means for rotating the support member relative to the base member, and a flexible coupling interconnects the base member and the antenna element. The arrangement is such that, as the support member rotates relative to the base member, the flexible coupling transmits torsional forces to rotate the antenna element or array of elements oppositely relative to the support member.

    • A broadband two arm planar/conical/helix antenna is disclosed. The antenna radiation element includes a two arm planar spiral antenna section, a two arm conical spiral section connected to the planar spiral section and a four arm helix section connected to the conical spiral section for termination. The antenna element is formed on a fiberglas substrate which contains a molded internal load absorber. A tapered magnetic external load absorber covers the antenna radiation element. The supporting fiberglas substrate is fixed to a balun housing. The balun housing has a centrally disposed, upwardly extending tubular means for passing a feed line to the planar spiral section. The internal load absorber comprises a molded body including a first part of silicone resin having graded layers of carbon and micro balloons for absorbing without reflection back lobe radiation of the planar spiral and to absorb the internal electric fields present owing to the conical spiral and a second part of silicone resin filled with iron powder for improving low level frequency response. The external load absorber is a silicone body filled with iron powder; it has a cylindrical portion of uniform thickness around the helix spiral and a smooth tapered portion around the conical spiral. The external load absorber so shaped coacts with the radiation elements and internal load absorber in reducing the effective diameter of the antenna while maintaining uniform broadband antenna performance.

    • A multi-arm spiral antenna which allows unlimited broadband operation with dual senses of circular polarization. The antenna comprises spiral arms having width variations which are logperiodically scaled to produce local reflection (stopband) regions along the arms. The position of the stop-band regions is a function of the period and amplitude of width variations. Arm currents are produced by excitation of the antenna. These currents are reflected by the stopband regions. The relative phase of the reflected currents is a function of the relative scaling of the arms.
