    • The invention relates to a capacitive angle encoder for detecting a rotational position of a rotatable object relative to a stationary object as well as a withdrawable feeder for circuit board component insertion machines, said withdrawable feeder being equipped with an angle encoder according to the invention. The angle encoder comprises a stator that supports first and second transmitting electrodes and first and second receiving electrodes, and a rotor which supports an incremental coupling electrode and an absolute value-coupling electrode. The incremental coupling electrode is designed such that the first electrostatic field is modulated by a change in capacitance in response to a change in the rotational position of the rotor, while the absolute value-coupling electrode is designed such that the second electrostatic field is modulated by a change in capacitance in response to an absolute rotational position of the rotor. A signal processing circuit detects the first and second modulated electrostatic field and determines a measured value for the position in response to the detected field. The at least one first and second transmitting electrode and the at least one first and second receiving electrode are coplanar to one another.

    • A position encoder uses a track encoded with a pattern of bit-widths in accordance with a sequence. The sequence may be any sequence having unique subsequences, and may be a pseudo-random noise (PRN) sequence such that each N-bit subsequence occurs only once on the track. Sensors detect transitions between the bits and bit-widths as the track moves with respect to the sensors to provide in-phase and quadrature-phase pick-off signals. The pickoff signals are summed and absolute value thresholded. The absolute value thresholded sum signal is sampled when the quadrature pairs are in the null00null or null11null quadrants, and latched when the sum signal goes high to distinguish between wide and narrow bit widths. The latch is shifted into a shift data register for use in determining the position of the encoder track. In the case of a PRN sequence having a length of 2N bits, the position may be an absolute position when the number of valid bits in the shift data register is at least N. The position may be an incremental position when the number of transitions detected is less than N.

    • A position sensor encodes absolute position via n consecutive members of a pseudorandom sequence of bits, where each bit (30a-30k) comprises a region of high transmission or reflectivity adjacent to a region of low transmission or reflectivity. The pseudorandom sequence is chosen such that every series of n consecutive bits (30a-30k) in the sequence is predominantly formed from a predetermined bit value (1 or 0). The light transmitted or reflected from the series is therefore detected as a substantially periodic intensity pattern (42), which can be processed via Fourier analysis to yield an accurate interpolation of relative position.     • An absolute position transducer system has two members movable relative to each other and includes a code track transducer and at least one fine wavelength transducer. The code track is arranged to form a sequential pattern of base-N code words, where N is greater than two (i.e., non-binary). Each sequential non-binary code word identifies an absolute position of one member with respect to the other at a first resolution. Alternatively, the code track is arranged to form a pseudo-random non-binary code word pattern. In this case, the transducer system compares a non-binary code word with a look-up table to determine an absolute position of one member with respect to the other at a first resolution. In order to generate a non-binary code word pattern, code track transducer employs different-sized flux disrupters, different-sized flux enhancers, or a combination of flux disrupters and enhancers.

    • A digital position signal generator suitable for gain control and other purposes. A typical embodiment includes a rotary disk notionally divided into a plurality of sectors of the same angle about the disk axis. Some of the disk sectors have radial extensions which are detectable by photocouplers. The photocouplers are fixedly disposed about the disk axis with angular spacings each greater than the angle of each disk sector. Thus, with the rotation of the disk, the photocouplers produce binary zero and one outputs in various predetermined combinations nonsequentially representing successive predetermined angular positions of the disk. A position data generator circuit such as a microcomputer is provided which has stored thereon meaningful position data sequentially representing the successive predetermined angular positions of the disk. Inputting each output combination of the detectors, the position data generator circuit puts out a corresponding one of the meaningful position data. Several other embodiments are disclosed.
