    • A vehicle lighting unit can effectively utilize both the portions of the reflector divided by the plane passing through the optical axis even when a light emitting element with directionality like an LED is employed as well as can be provided with an enhanced aesthetic feature. The vehicle lighting unit can include a reflector having, as a front surface, a concave reflecting surface formed on the basis of a revolved parabolic surface with respect to an optical axis serving as a rotational symmetric axis; a reflecting plate disposed along the optical axis in front of the reflecting surface and having a rear edge disposed at or near the focal point of the reflecting surface so as to vertically divide a space in front of the reflecting surface into two regions; a light emitting element disposed in the upper region than the reflecting plate and in front of the focal point, directed to the focal point; and a condenser lens disposed between the light emitting element and the focal point, configured to collect light emitted from the light emitting element to a position at or near the focal point.

    • A vehicle headlight can be configured such that the size of the vehicle headlight which includes a semiconductor laser element employed as a light source is reduced. The vehicle headlight can includes: a projection lens disposed on an optical axis extending in a front-to-rear direction of a vehicle body; a light-emitting device including a semiconductor laser element configured to emit a laser beam and a light-transmitting member configured to absorb and convert the wavelength of at least part of the laser beam from the semiconductor laser element; and a first reflection surface configured to reflect the light from the light-emitting device so as to transmit and project forward the resulting light through the projection lens. The vehicle headlight can further include: a light detection unit configured to detect a light beam of a specific color, the light detection unit being disposed between the projection lens and the light-emitting device and below the optical axis; a second reflection surface configured to reflect the light beam from the light-emitting device toward the light detection unit, the second reflection surface being disposed ahead of the front end of the first reflection surface; and a control unit configured to control the semiconductor laser element in accordance with a detection result provided by the light detection unit so that the semiconductor laser element does not emit the laser beam.

    • A vehicular headlamp has a projection lens, a light source disposed behind a rear focal point of the projection lens, and a reflector that reflects light from the light source forward. The vehicular headlamp forms a forward light distribution pattern. The vehicular headlamp includes a plate-like shade having a front-end portion positioned in the vicinity of the rear focal point of the projection lens to form a cut-off line of the forward light distribution pattern. The shade extends rearward and obliquely downward from the front-end portion. An overhead sign reflective surface is provided on a lower surface of the shade. The overhead sign reflective surface reflects light from the reflector toward the projection lens to form a part of an overhead sign distribution pattern. A dark portion forming portion is formed on the overhead sign reflective surface.
