    • A yieldable highway swing sign is described which swings out of the way when struck by farm equipment or other objects such as wet snow from snow plows. The sign has a torsion bar which returns the sign to its original position after being struck. The sign has notches in its hinges to maintain its original position. The notches resist any displacement forces by providing an inclined plane of 40.degree. which must be overcome before the sign is displaced in an arc pivoting around the torsion bar. The displacement of the sign is limited to a 90.degree. displacement from the original position by the configuration of the hinges and is helped by the increased torque created by the torsion bar as the sign swings further from its original position.

    • The disclosed spring mechanism is useful, for example, as a counterbalance or as a spring suspension. The preferred form of mechanism has opposite output parts for connection to the external apparatus. One output part is fixed to two side-by-side torsion-spring columns--two bundles of rods--and the side-by-side opposite ends of the columns bear diametrically opposite cam followers. The second output part is unified with complementary cam tracks for the cam followers of both columns. The spring mechanism has varied characteristics, depending on the shapes of the cam tracks.

    • The system is a torsion bar of which the torsion element is a fiber glass tube having metal anchors. The fiber glass has a low Young''s modulus to provide flexibility, and the high Young''s modulus metal anchors provide strength. The tube is not bonded to an anchor, but the two are secured by two tapered elastomeric annuli in the anchor body, which arrangement allows the tube to deflect relative to the anchor from a maximum at the thick end of the annuli to a minimum at the thin end.

    • A device is disclosed which absorbs from a structure such as a building energy imparted by an earthquake or a high wind and so inhibits damage to the building. Two members of the structure which move in opposite directions during vibration are coupled by levers to a bar of annealed low carbon steel in such a way that the bar is strained in torsion during vibration. A bar having a square cross-section with a side five inches long strained up to 4 percent in torsion has a capacity of approximately 70,000 N for several hundred cycles. The failure of such an absorber at the end of its useful life is not catastrophic.
