    • Process for preparing large crystals of basic aluminum nitrate (BAN) from a nitric acid feed solution containing Al uO u values comprising the steps of: (1) evaporating water and nitric acid from the solution in a single step evaporation performed at a temperature of between about 270 and about 450`F and at a pressure of between about atmospheric and about 60 psig to produce an evaporated liquor comprising at least about 16% alumina by weight; (2) holding the evaporated liquor in a quiescent state for a period of between about 20 minutes and about two hours within the temperature range of about 270`F to about 350`F; (3) injecting water into the product of step 2, the water being added in an amount sufficient to adjust the composition of the conditioned liquor to a composition expressible as the sum of two components -- (1) ANN (Al uO u.6HNO u.15H uO or Al(NO u) u.9H uO), and (2) The desired crystal product BAN or Wiseite (a) BAN (Al uO u.2HNO u.5H uO or Al(OH) uNO u.2.OH uO). or (b) Wiseite (Al uO u.2HNO u.4H uO or Al(OH) uNO u.1.5H uO) to precipitate large crystals of BAN; and (4) separating the large crystals.

    • A method of purifying an aluminum source includes dissolving an aluminum ion source to provide a first solution including aluminum ions having a pH of not greater than 4.0, adjusting the pH of the first solution with a tetraalkylammonium hydroxide solution to a pH in range of 4.1 to 8.4 thereby forming an aluminum hydroxide precipitate, separating the aluminum hydroxide precipitate from the first solution, washing the separated aluminum hydroxide precipitate with an aqueous solution having a pH in a range of 4.1 to 8.4, dissolving the washed aluminum hydroxide precipitate using an acid to provide a second solution having a pH of not greater than 4.0, and forming an aluminum salt from the second solution.

    • Processes are provided for preparing basic aluminum compounds of formula (I): Al2(OH)6-aXa, wherein X is Cl-, Br-, F-, I-, SO4= or NO3- and a is about 0.9 to 4, the compound being characterized by size exclusion chromatography as having a Band I percent aluminum value of about 5 % or less and a Band II percent aluminum value of about 50 % to 90 %, which comprise (a) suspending an aluminum metal in an aqueous medium to form a slurry, (b) applying ultrasonic energy to the slurry, (c) reacting the sonicated slurry with an aluminum compound of formula (II): AlnXm, or an acid of formula (III): HnX, wherein X is Cl-, Br-, F-, I-, SO4= or NO3-, n is 1 or 2 and m is 3, at a temperature of about 45 C to 100 C to form a reaction product.
