    • A trailer and a system for picking up and centering spools and a method for stabilizing the trailer when not attached to a towing vehicle. The device to pick up and hold the spools of cable utilizes the mechanical advantages that are gained through the use of a fulcrum and a lever. The use of the fulcrum increases mechanical advantage making it possible to lift and transport heavy spools by a single individual without the use of hydraulics, electric motors, pulley systems and numerous other embodiments. Another feature of this invention is the position and pivoting action of the rack and range of motion of the rack. The angled support rail pivots along with the rack. The pivoting rack has a pocket system with a built-in locking device that secures the spool during transport. The pockets facilitate easy pick-up and form a secure nesting position for the spool.

    • An endpiece which forms an integral part of a mandrel used to support a roll of material engages a guide. The endpiece comprises a cylindrical part which can be inserted into the mandrel, a collar which rests against a facing surface of the endpiece, and a projecting attachment. A guiding and retaining groove is provided along the length of the projecting attachment to form a guide path. A cooperating guide is provided on a bracket that supports the roll of material. The guide is disposed on an inner side of the bracket and comprises slightly-projecting flats which form and define a channel to receive the projecting attachment of the endpiece as so enable the endpiece to be inserted and retained therein. The channel extends into a part for receiving the endpiece following the insertion thereof.

    • An apparatus is provided for measuring, cutting, and rolling material such as floor covering. The apparatus includes a wheeled support frame which receives a base roll of material from which material is unwound a material take-up shaft device onto which material from the base roll is wound. The take-up shaft device includes a pair of outwardly expandable bars which clamp the edge of the material in place on the take-up device and which can be contracted to release the old material from the take-up device. The take-up device is releasably mounted on the support frame by a mechanism which permits the entire take-up device with a roll of material wound thereon to be removed from the remainder of the apparatus. A measuring device measures the length of the material wound onto the take-up device and a floating cutting table assembly including a cutting bar assists in cutting off the material from the base roll when the material wound onto the take-up device is of the desired length.

    • A coupling between a motor-driven shaft and a mandrel for winding or unwinding reels has a recess provided in the end portion of the shaft and serving to receive the end portion of the mandrel. The end portion of the shaft has a wheel which is pivotable between an inoperative position to permit insertion of the end portion of the mandrel into the recess and an operative position in which the end portion of the mandrel is confined in the recess. The end portion of the mandrel has a non-circular peripheral surface which is surrounded by the complementary surface of the end portion of the shaft when the end portion of the mandrel is properly inserted into the recess and the wheel is held in the operative position. In order to ensure that the shaft can drive the mandrel, even if the wheel is held in the inoperative position and/or during starting of the mandrel, the bottom face of the end portion of the shaft in the recess or the end face of the end portion of the mandrel has a pivotable tongue or a reciprocable pin which is biased into a complementary groove or hole in the end face of the end portion of the mandrel or in the bottom face in the recess as soon as the mandrel is properly inserted into that part of the recess which is provided in the non-pivotable section of the end portion of the shaft.
