摘要： The present invention relates to an agitator assembly for use in a cleaning apparatus, the assembly including: an agitator comprising a body with a first and a second end, and a first alignment formation and a first securing formation at or adjacent the first end; and a drive member operable to impart rotation about a drive axis, and providing a second alignment formation adapted to cooperate with the first alignment formation, and a second securing formation adapted to engage the first securing formation; wherein relative axial movement of the agitator in a first direction towards the drive member causes contact between the first and second alignment formations; further relative axial movement of the agitator in the first direction causes relative rotation between the agitator and drive member; and yet further relative axial movement of the agitator in the first direction causes engagement between the first and second securing formations, substantially to prevent further relative rotational movement between the agitator and drive member.

摘要： A vacuum cleaner (12) having a powered brush roll (10) and thread guard (56). The thread guard (56) is a molded thermoplastic element enclosing the adjacent end of the brush roll (16) and the associated bearing (21). The thread guard provides a skirt (43) extending around the adjacent end of the brush roll (16) and is held against rotation therewith sound-deadening mounting structure for the brush roll. The skirt (43) is initially sized to frictionally fit the adjacent end of the brush roll. Inital relative rotation between the skirt and the brush roll heat-softens the thermoplastic material of the skirt and wears it away to provide a zero clearance fit to prevent string,thread and other debris from entering the bearing zone. The brush roll body (16) is wood, which will expand with changes in ambient humidity, causing frictional contact to be re-established, whereupon the thread guard automatically wears to re-establish a zero clearance fit.

摘要： A self-aligning bearing structure (21) for vacuum cleaner brushes and the like includes a plastic sleeve (26) and a metal bearing element (27) having a spherical periphery (58). The sleeve (26) is initially formed with a flared end (34), allowing the bearing element (27) to be inserted to provide a subassembly which is then pressed axially into a cylindrical bore (66) in the vacuum cleaner brush body (19) to produce a spherical socket mating with the spherical periphery (58). Relative rotation between the sleeve (26) and bearing element (27) is prevented by a plurality of peripherally spaced teardrop-shaped projections (44) formed on the sleeve (26) which fit into teardrop-shaped recesses (62) on the bearing element (27). The recesses (62) are sufficiently closely spaced and shaped so that the recesses (62) and projections (44) automatically interfit upon assembly, by automated equipment which does not require special orientation means.
