    • The invention relates to a stem guide that is configured to receive a replaceable cartridge. The stem guide includes a cartridge receiving end having a cartridge attachment means for attaching the cartridge to the stem guide in a manner that the cartridge can be removed from the stem guide without causing an amount of damage to either the cartridge or the stem guide which prevents either the cartridge or stem guide from being used again.     • The invention relates to a method for adjusting the buoyancy of a fishing bobber. The method includes providing a buoyant member and a stem guide configured to receive the buoyant member, mounting the buoyant member to the stem guide and cutting the buoyant member. The buoyant member is made of a material capable of being severed by a cutting device and having first length, a lower end, and an upper end. The stem guide receives the buoyant member and a fishing line with fishing tackle. The buoyant member is cut such that the buoyant member has a second length shorter than the first length. The buoyant member is cut to a second length such that the buoyancy of the buoyant member when cut to a second length is enough to oppose the tendency of the stem guide and fishing tackle to submerse the buoyant member such that a top surface of the cut buoyant member is adjacent to the surface of the water when the stem guide, buoyant member, fishing line and any fishing tackle are placed in the water.

    • A unified swivel snap device provides optional rotational motion for use as fishing tackle to couple lures, bait hooks, and weights to a main fishing line. Embodiments include a rod rotatably held within a housing and a snap configured to lock the swivel by attaching to both the housing and the rod. Embodiments of the swivel can be unlocked by attaching the snap to the rod alone and allowing the rod to swivel relative to the housing. The swivel snap can be used for enhancing a variety of fishing mechanisms including the shank of jigs and the spindle of lures and other apparatus attached to fishing lines. Embodiments of the locking swivel snap can be used in other applications which call for selective locking of swivel motion.

    • An improved method for overhead casting and retrieving a fishing jig and bait. The fishing caster provides a generally cylindrical, hollow body having a flat, closed top, a wall and an open bottom. The body presents a body axis from top to bottom. Drag upon reeling in is reduced by a plurality of elliptical vents formed in the wall, each vent presenting an elliptical axis substantially in alignment with the body axis, and by a cone within the hollow body, extending downwardly from the top.The improved fishing caster also includes structure forming a threading hole in the wall and two radially spaced indentations along the bottom of the body. The indentations form a tooth substantially aligned with the body axis, to secure the fishing line to the caster. A fluorescent lighting stick is mounted on top, for night fishing, as well as location of the caster in foliage.

    • A breakaway link or flexible connector take the form of a short coil of wireform material having known elastic and tensile properties. The breakaway link is used to link articles in circumstances where it is desirable to have the articles separate when exposed to a pre-determined level of force. The breakaway link is a simple coil and will uncoil or release when exposed to predictable levels of force. The flexible connector is used to link articles in circumstances where some flexibility is desirable but release is not desirable. The flexible connector can be a crossed and hooked coil which will expand and/or respond predictably to a given range of force, but will resist opening until exposed to a much higher level of force. Both the breakaway link and the flexible connector are preferably constructed of known superelastic materials whose unique properties give the devices increased repeatability.

    • A breakaway coupling having a loop for receiving a connecting element. The loop includes a material reduction region. The material reduction region is formed as part of the loop such that the loop breaks at that region when placed under a pre-defined load. The coupling may be of fixed or swivel configuration. The material reduction region has dimensions less than the remainder of the loop such that-when the selected load is reached, the loop will break in that region. This design is particularly suited for those conditions when an underwater connecting element, such as a rope tied between an underwater lobster trap and a floating buoy, comes in contact with a marine animal. If the animal is of sufficient size, such as a whale, to apply the selected load to loop breakage, the connecting element will be released and the possibility of entanglement with the marine animal will be substantially reduced.

    • An adjustable fishing sinker release enabling release of a sinker from a fishing line after a fish has been hooked includes a generally hollow housing member, open at both ends, bearing a hole proximate one end for attachment to a fishing line, and a release slot along one side for releasable capture of a sinker. A pin member is slidably engaged within the housing member, and includes a first leg portion that catches on the housing member and prevents disengagement, a loop portion for attachment of a fishing hook, and a second leg portion that selectively extends across and closes the slot on the one side of the housing member. When a fish strikes the fishing hook, the pin moves to the open position, opening the slot and releasing the sinker. The force required to move the pin may be easily and conveniently adjusted either at the time of manufacture or in the field to fit the intended catch.
