    • Encoding a video signal according to a scalable video coding (SVC) technique employs two different encoding paths for the base layer and the enhancement layers respectively, whereby the two encoding paths share common hardware encoding modules. For example, a control module can route received video information associated with the base layer directly to the hardware encoder modules for encoding, while routing video information associated with the enhancement layers to an upscaler. The upscaled video information is then provided to the hardware encoder module for processing in similar fashion to the base layer information. The hardware encoder provides encoded video information to another control module, which determines whether to route the information to a hardware or software entropy encoder, based on whether the encoded video information is associated with the base layer or an enhancement layer, respectively.

    • A motion compensation module can be used in a video encoder for encoding a video input signal that includes a sequence of images that are segmented into a plurality of macroblocks.     • The size of received multimedia data (108; 208) is changed by a processing device (102) based on at least a first characteristic of the content. The size can be adapted by changing the bit rate of the received multimedia data, changing a resolution of the received multimedia data, or changing an audio volume of the received multimedia data. The transrating of the multimedia can use rule sets based on content characteristics. An appropriate rule set (326) can be selected using program information (329), such as from an EPG (318). After transrating, the multimedia data can be transmitted via a network to a destination multimedia device (210) or stored locally (106) for subsequent use. An index table can be used to reference a portion of the data with the first characteristic or an identifier can be inserted (316) into the received multimedia data at that point. The data size can also be based on remaining storage capacity.
