摘要： An electron beam welding system having improved deep penetration weld characteristics in which the electron beam is repeatedly deflected from an undeflected nominal position, as the beam traverses along a weld zone, to build up a heat distribution pattern in the vicinity of the weld zone. The heat distribution pattern is made up of a number of substantially distinct zones of different heat density with a preferred pattern comprising three zones with a space between the first zone (A) and second zone (B). The third zone (C) leads the second zone (B) and the space trails the second zone (B) in the direction of traversal of the beam with the maximum heat density occurring in the second zone (B).

摘要： A method of joining pipes having liners (3) of thermoplastics material comprises causing the pipe wall (1) to overlap the liner (3) and inserting a spacer member (2) compatible with the liner in the area of overlap of the proposed join. Alternatively, the pipe wall (1) can be cut away such that the lining (3) forms the overlap and a spacer member (2) compatible with the pipe wall (1) inserted. The weld join of either the spacer member (2) to its material or the overlap material together is made followed by the other. The two separate actions leave the material not being joined at that moment substantially unaffected.

摘要： in the bumped-tape automated bonding process for connecting leads to a semi-conductor circuit device, it is known to form the bumps on the free ends of the conductive leads of the tape by plating or etching. In the present invention, the free ends of the leads on the tape are heated by means of a laser beam (32) to melt the ends of the leads (10) so that surface tension forces form the liquid-phase end of each lead into a ball, constituting the bonding bump (12a). The bumped ends of the leads of the tape are then bonded to terminals of the semiconductor device by conventional means.

摘要： method of forming a ball on a wire by spark discharge to permit ball bonding of the wire to a component or a terminal comprises: initiating the formation of an arc between an electrode and the wire by applying between them a high voltage (V2) from a high-voltage, low-current source (46, 64 to 76) which is effective only until the arc is formed; and, once the arc has been formed, drawing current for forming the ball from a low-voltage (Vl), high-current source (44, 50-56). Apparatus for forming a ball on a wire by this method can be completely safe, by using a very low capacitance (76) in the high voltage source, which is made to discharge through a resistor (74). Sufficient power for forming the ball can be provided by the low-voltage source provided that it incorporates a very large capacitance (52). The method can alternatively be performed with the use of electronic power supplies, supplied for example by constant-current sources.
