    • This application discloses a sealing seat for a ball valve 10. Within a housing 12 is an apertured ball 29 which is rotatable between positions for permitting or precluding flow. The seats include a retainer 30 formed of soft metal having a projection 36 positioned to engage the ball 20 when fluid pressure acts thereon and to give structural integrity to an annular sealing member 42 formed of expanded graphite particles. This annular sealing member 42 also provides lubricity to the retainer 30 in the form of graphite particles transferred to the retainer 30 upon rotation of the ball 20 to minimize galling of the ball 20. In a modification, Fig. 5, (not shown), the projection 36 is provided with an annular groove to help retain the sealing member 42 which has metal screen wires embedded therein.

    • 1518566 Seals CRANE PACKING CO 9 Nov 1976 [2 Jan 1976] 46680/76 Heading F2B A rotary end face seal comprises relatively rotatable seal rings 14, 17 having radially contacting sealing surfaces 16, 29 respectively, the ring 17 being located and held against rotation relative to a gland plate 19 and being axially supported in the gland plate 19 with limited contact via a land 33 located at the radially outer region of the ring 17, the design of the seal rings 14, 17 being such that the centroid 31 of an axial section through the ring 17 is located radially inward of the land 33 so that sealing pressures on the contacting surfaces 16, 21 provide a clockwise turning moment about centroid 31 as shown, whilst the centroid 30 of an axial section through the ring 14 is located such that fluid pressures on selected portions of the ring will develop counterclockwise turning moments of force about the centroid of the ring 14. The arrangement is such that the combined effect of each ring 14, 17 tending to twist about its centroid 31, 30 will pinch off face leakage at the outer diameter of the sealing faces 16, 29 and also counteract distortion of the faces 16, 29 caused by pressure and temperature gradients across the surfaces thereof whereby the necessary sealing flatness of the faces 16, 29 is preserved. To achieve the above results, two further conditions are also required. (1) The ratio of the radial sealing faces width to the inner radius of the faces must be in the range of 0À085 to 0À30, and (2) hydro-pads, in the form of lubricant recesses 28, must be provided, and as shown are arranged around the periphery of the seal face 16. The ring 14 is of carbon.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus for handling workpieces to be polished on a rotatable disc type of polishing machine and comprising a workholder mounted on an arm oscillatable in a vertical plane through substantially 180 DEG so that in one position the workholder is inverted to facilitate loading and unloading thereof, and in another position the workholder supports the workpieces by differential pressure thereon over the polishing disc. The movement of the arm may be arrested as the workpieces touch the polishing disc, and an air cylinder on the arm moves the workholder against the disc and presses the workholder against the disc with a higher pressure than is permissible with wax-adhered workpieces. At the termination of the polishing operation the workholder is raised from the polishing disc and the arm is rotated to invert the workholder, after which a cleaning spray is automatically applied to the workpieces.

    • 1,244,142. Rotary shaft seals. CRANE PACKING CO. 4 Feb., 1970 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 5441/70. Heading F2B. A vertically disposed rotary shaft 11 is sealed where it extends through an opening 12 in a pressurized housing 10 by means comprising a rotary mechanical seal 29 and a supply of lubricant for the seal comprising upper and lower reservoirs 50 and 52 located respectively above and below the seal contact faces, the bottoms of the reservoirs being interconnected and the top of the lower reservoir 52 communicating with the interior of the housing 10. The seal 29 is housed with radial clearance in a recess 17 in a casting 13 secured to the housing 10 and comprises a rotatable sealing washer 34 which is slidably mounted on a sleeve 36 secured to the shaft 11 and urged by springs 49 into facial sealing contact with a stationary seating washer 30 sealed to an end plate 19 by an 0-ring 31. An annular space 16 is provided between the shaft and the casting 13 so that the lubricant is pressurized by the fluid in the housing 10. A filler plug 54 is fitted in the plate 19 and the washer 30 forms with the plate 19 and sleeve 36, a chamber 58 in which oil leakage past the contact faces 32, 33 of the seal is collected and drained through a tube 60 to a measuring vessel 61.

A ring 27 having an outwardly-tapered inner end surface 29 is sealed to a cylindrical surface, e.g. of a sleeve 14 secured to a shaft 12, by a deformable ring 28, e.g. of P.T.F.E., of substantially triangular cross-section wedged between the surfaces 14, 29 and having circumferential grooves 36, 37 formed in two of its surfaces, the walls of one of the grooves being spread apart by rigid means, such as a ring 40 of metal or thermosetting plastic, wedged into the groove so that one of the walls thereof is urged against the cylindrical surface. The ring 27 forms a rotary seal with a ring 16 held in a closure-plate 13 secured to a housing 10 in which the shaft 12 rotates. The ring 28 is urged axially by a plurality of helical springs 33 which are located in recesses in a retainer 30 mounted on the shaft and which press against a washer 35 in bearing engagement with the ring 40.
