    • A light emitting system comprises an LED-based light emitting device and a controller for controlling operation of the device. The device comprises at least two LEDs that are operable to generate light of different colors that contribute to the emission product of the device. The controller is operable to control light emission from the LEDs in response to the measured intensity of the first and second color light contributions in the emission product. To measure the individual light contributions the controller is operable to interrupt, or at least change, light emission from one LED for a selected time period and during this time period to measure the intensity of the emission product of the device. The intensity of light of the first and second color can be determined by comparing the measured intensity with the measured intensity when the light emission from the other LED is interrupted or changed.

    • A light emitting device comprises an excitation source (20), one or more light emitting diode(s) operable to generate excitation light of a first wavelength range (λ1) and a light emitting surface (14) having a phosphor material (26) which absorbs at least a part of the excitation light and emits light of a second wavelength range (λ2), wherein light (32) emitted by the device comprises combined light of the first and second wavelength ranges emitted by the light emitting surface.     • A lighting system comprises at least one excitation source (5), preferably an LED, operable to generate and radiate excitation radiation of a first wavelength (λ1); a shade (4) configured to at least in part surround the at least one source (5) and remotely located thereto; and at least one phosphor (16) provided in or on at least a part of the shade (4), wherein the phosphor (16) emits radiation of a different wavelength in response to incident excitation radiation.     • Novel green phosphors are disclosed having the comprise silicate-based compounds having the formula (Sr,A1)x(Si,A2)(O,A3)2+x:Eu2+, where A1 is at least one divalent cation (a 2+ ion) including Mg, Ca, Ba, or Zn, or a combination of 1+ and 3+ cations; A2 is a 3+, 4+, or 5+ cation, including at least one of B, Al, Ga, C, Ge, N, and P; A3 is a 1−, 2−, or 3− anion, including F, Cl, Br, and S; and x is any value between 1.5 and 2.5, both inclusive. The formula is written to indicate that the A1 cation replaces Sr; the A2 cation replaces Si, and the A3 anion replaces O. These green phosphors are configured to emit visible light having a peak emission wavelength greater than about 480 nm. They have applications in green illumination systems, red-green-blue backlighting systems, white LEDs, and plasma display panels (PDPs).
