    • The invention relates to a scanning and interpretation device (1) comprising an optical input unit (2) for optically reading graphic signs and characters; and a processing unit (3) which is connected to the optical input unit (2) and where the read character data is processed and interpreted by means of a computer program installed therein; said processing unit (3) being further connected to a display unit (4) for displaying the translations. According to the invention, the optical input unit (2), the processing unit (3) and the display unit (4) are arranged in an oblong pen-shaped case (7), at which the device can advantageously be held by hand and supported during use; in the first end (72) of the case (7) there is fitted a scanning hole (9) provided in the optical input unit (2), through which the character data is read into the device (1). In a second embodiment of the invention, the scanning and interpretation device comprises a separate input and display unit and an interpretation unit, which are arranged to communicate between themselves, advantageously wirelessly. The method according to the invention is connected to the second embodiment, in which method data is transferred between the first unit, i.e. the input and display unit, and the second unit, i.e. the interpretation unit.
