    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively reduce an engine combustion sound. SOLUTION: A combustion sound sensor 15 is provided in order to detect a combustion sound in each air cylinder of a diesel engine. A control circuit (ECU) 20 conducts a pilot fuel injection to each air cylinder by fuel injection valves 10a to 10d before main fuel injection. The ECU uses a combustion sound of each air cylinder detected with the combustion sound sensor 15 at the time of stopping the pilot fuel injection as a standard value of the combustion sound, and calculates a combustion sound control amount on a dimensionless basis to determine a combustion sound detection value of each air cylinder in operating of the pilot fuel injection detected by the sensor 15. Further, the ECU corrects the amount of the pilot fuel injection so as to minimize the combustion sound control amount. By using the combustion sound control amount, the combustion sound of each air cylinder can be assessed by a common standard in spite of a difference in a condition of each air cylinder, so that a pilot fuel injection amount correction for suppressing the combustion sound is simplified and the precision of the correction is improved.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect a combustion sound suppressing effect due to pilot fuel injection. SOLUTION: Combustion sound sensors 15a-15d are provided on each of cylinders of an engine 1, combustion sound of each of the cylinders is detected by a gate circuit 18, it is AD-converted by a high speed AD converter 18 and it is input to an electronic control unit ECU 20 as a combustion sound signal of each of the cylinders. The ECU computes a sound pressure level for each of frequency components by FFT-processing the input combustion sound signals, and a combustion sound central value is computed in accordance with the sound pressure level of a specific frequency component. The specific frequency component is a frequency component to be expressed as (n+(1/2))×f when an inverse number of a pilot fuel injection interval is specified as (f). Since the specific frequency component is comparatively larger than the other frequency components in sound pressure level lowering width at practice when practicing pilot fuel injection to the time of stopping pilot fuel injection, the computed combustion sound central value is hardly influenced upon by noise, and combustion sound suppressing effect becomes a value to precisely express the combustion sound suppressing effect.
