    • A communication system is provided of selecting the most approximate line from two or more connectable lines and connecting with a provider through the selected line in the mobile communication environment. The mobile device and the public phone of each phone company provide a standard wireless data communication facility, respectively. The public line pre-stores information about dial-up numbers of access points and a transmission speed of an internet provider. When the user starts the communication, the mobile device operates to obtain the most approximate access point information from each of the public phones and then dial up the most approximate access point through the public phone/line well-specified to the user.

    • In an apparatus for optically reading out through an imaging optics a first image of information by a photodetector. The information is attached to a target. In the apparatus, a marker beam irradiating unit irradiates on a target a marker beam for indicating a field of view of the photodetector on the target. A first pickup unit causes the photodetector to pick up through the imaging optics a second image of the target based on the field of view while the marker beam is being irradiated on the target by the marker beam irradiating device. A position detecting unit detects a position of the marker beam being irradiated on the target with respect to the field of view based on the picked-up second image. A distance determining unit determines a distance between the apparatus and the target based on the detected position of the marker beam.

    • In development of an expert system, there is a problem that when sufficient knowledge is provided for solving a problem, the amount of information to be processed is increased thereby retarding the processing operation, and furthermore descriptive information is not used practically when descriptive information is insufficient and the problem cannot be analyzed sufficiently. In order to solve this problem, there is provided a function of "extracting knowledge required to solve problems within a certain range from detailed knowledge automatically". The expert system includes a first knowledge base for storing detailed knowledge, a second knowledge base for storing compiled knowledge, an inference mechanism for solving a problem by using the second knowledge base, and an analysis mechanism for extracting knowledge having high utilization from the first knowledge base and storing the extracted knowledge in the second knowledge base. The analysis mechanism analyzes a problem solving process example and stores a combination of knowledge which is frequently used as one compiled knowledge and knowledge which is frequently used independently as one compiled knowledge from the first knowledge base into the second knowledge base.
