    • Methods for forming a display using imaging elements are provided. In one method, a first surface is provided and imaging elements are provided on the first surface. The imaging elements are positionally aligned and a location order is determined for the imaging elements. Wherein the imaging elements each comprise: a wireless communication circuit adapted to detect a wireless communication signal and to generate a control signal; an illumination circuit having an illumination element, said illumination circuit being adapted so that the illumination element generates light at an intensity that is based upon the control signal. A body is provided containing the wireless communication circuit and the light source; wherein the body occupies a space that is less than about five cubic millimeters.

    • An imaging array has a plurality of pixel sites (22), each having a photosensing element (24) providing a variable signal in response to incident radiation. A first frame storage circuit (46a) is electrically coupled to the photosensing element and has a first charge storage element for storing a first photosensing element signal and a first switching element (26) to switch the photosensing element to the first frame storage circuit. A second switching element (26) switches the first charge storage element (32) for reading the signal stored. A second frame storage circuit (46b) is electrically coupled to the photosensing element and has a second charge storage element for storing a second signal.     • A viewing device and method are provided for use with an image transparency having an associated tracking memory. The viewing device has a display adapted to present at least two illumination patterns, a reader device for obtaining data stored in a tracking memory of an image transparency positioned proximate to the display surface, and a control processing unit. The control processing unit is adapted to receive the obtained data and to generate more than one illumination pattern with a first of the illumination patterns formed for passing through the transparency and second of the illumination patterns formed for viewing on the display without passing through the transparency, wherein the appearance of at least one of the illumination patterns is determined based upon the data obtained from the tracking memory.

    • An apparatus and method for forming a substantially invisible watermark or copy-deterrent pattern within a motion picture frame that utilizes spectral image data in order to apply a pattern that is not objectionable to a viewer, but that can be sensed and recorded by a video camera device. A digital watermark or copy deterrent pattern, message, animation, or obscuring effect can be formed to identify a legally distributed copy, degrade the quality of an illegally recorded copy, or expand the storage requirements for an illegally recorded copy using this technique. The pattern is applied using some combination of UV and IR light sources just outside the visible range, displayed on the movie screen. An illegally recorded copy may bear a visible watermark or copy-deterrent pattern which can be detected upon playback. A copy-deterrent pattern can also be used to make video compression techniques less effective, requiring that an illegally recorded copy require excessive amounts of storage media.
