    • A focus detecting device includes an image sensor such as a CCD which converts the intensity of the light indicent thereon into the amount of a charge, integrates or accumulates the charge, terminates the integration operation when the level of the integrated charge reaches a given value or when a given integration limit time has lapsed, and outputs the integrated charge as an image signal which in turn is amplified step-by-step in accordance with the brightness of the object for the focus condition detection. Two different integration limit times are provided such that the integration operation is terminated at the shorter time while the focus detection is possible within the shorter time. The integration operation is terminated at the longer integration limit time when the focus detection is impossible with the shorter time and with the image signal given by the integration for the shorter time.

    • The emitted light intensity of an electronic flash tube is maintained constant over a given time period by connecting the electronic flash tube in series with an inductor and a switching element across the main capacitor for energizing the flash tube, with a diode being connected across the serially connected flash tube and inductor and a polarity opposite to the current flow from the main capacitor to the flash tube. The switching element is intermittently turned off and on in accordance with the intensity of the light emitted from the flash tube. While the switching element is being turned off, the flash tube is energized by the energy stored in the inductor in the form of a magnetic field. An auxiliary capacitor may be provided across the flash tube. The flash light intensity may be monitored by the measurement of the emitted light, or by the detection of the voltage across the flash tube, or by the detection of the current flowing into the flash tube.

    • The present invention is an exposure information setting circuit for use in photographic cameras which calculates the required exposure time in response to input signals indicative of APEX indices and produces a signal indicative of the exposure time. The circuit is constituted mainly by an integrated circuit which takes advantage of the fact that although the absolute values of electrical characteristics of the circuit elements may fluctuate, particular ratios of such values can be maintained in a predetermined ratio with good precision. This maintenance of the particular ratios can be achieved without requiring any supplementary voltage sources or/and adjustment resistors, whereby large-scale production of the exposure information setting circuit at low cost is possible.

    • High resolution composite images and ultra wide composite images are produced in a digital camera which combines a plurality of images to form a composite image on a single sheet. An image sensing unit includes a movable image sensing optical unit having a first and second focal lengths and a two-dimensional image sensing device. The image sensing unit is driven to control the optical axis of the image sensing optical unit so as to capture a plurality of images via the two-dimensional image sensing device. The plurality of images are combined to produce a composite image. An ultra wide composite image at standard resolution is produced by setting the focal length of the image sensing optical unit at a first focal length on the wide angle side, and a high resolution composite image is produced by setting the focal length of the image sensing optical unit at a second focal length on the telephoto side.
