    • Methods and apparatus for compensating offsets in a read signal generated by a sensor associated with a probe of a local-probe data storage device during read-scanning by the probe of bit-positions on a storage surface. An apparatus comprises a generator for generating an offset compensation signal, and a subtraction stage for producing an output signal dependent on the difference between the offset compensation signal and the sensor read signal at each bit-position. In some embodiments, an offset signal generator generates an offset compensation signal dependent upon a predetermined measurement of the sensor read signal. In another aspect the offset signal generator low-pass filters the sensor read signal during read scanning to generate the offset compensation signal. Particular embodiments also include a secondary offset compensation stage for applying additional offset compensation techniques to the output signal from the subtraction stage.

    • A system and method for the resynchronization of a sequential decoder that decodes received signal samples stored within an input buffer is disclosed. The system comprises two auxiliary decoders coupled to the sequential decoder for running a simplified MAP decoding process when the input buffer reaches a threshold saturation level. Control of the respective increments of a read pointer and a write pointer allows one to detect the saturation of the input buffer and to derive a sequence of signal samples to the appropriate auxiliary decoder. The selected auxiliary decoder estimates a resynchronization state for the sequential decoder based on the sequence of signal samples. According to the read and the write pointers value, normal sequential decoding is resumed, otherwise, the second auxiliary decoder is selected. The selected auxiliary decoder estimates a resynchronization state for the sequential decoder based on a new sequence of signal samples.

    • Adaptive analog equalizer permitting 16 Mbit/s token ring (TR) transmission over unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cables. The equalizer (29) is located at the wiring concentrator (25), and consists of a variable and a fixed filter section. The existing TR receiver (49) and transmitter (53) remain unchanged. To compensate for distortion introduced by the cable section (19b) preceding the equalizer, the level of the signal (B) at the equalizer output (35) is used as a control criterion. The additional distortion contributed by the cable section (21a) following the equalizer is accounted for by measuring the level of the signal (D) received from the transmitter (53) of the next TR station. By these two measurements, the equalizer is adjusted such that the cable-length dependent distortion is eliminated at the next receiver (49). Transmitted Manchester-coded signals are received essentially distortion-free for cable attenuation ranging between 0 and 25 dB at 16 MHz, corresponding to zero and maximum cable lengths between TR stations. The amplification provided by equalization at the concentrator significantly mitigates also the effect of near-end crosstalk from the transmitter into the receiver input of TR stations.
