    • In the case of printing in three-value level utilizing two kinds of inks mutually different densities for one color (higher and lower density inks), it is assumed that a reflection density of a region having a predetermined area when solid print is performed only by the lower density ink, and that when solid print is performed only by the higher density ink are expressed ODt and ODn, respectively. Since the granular appearance of the ink dots is expressed in terms of reflection density of one dot, the granular appearance of a lower density ink dot at a portion of image formed only by the lower density ink dots and the granular appearance of a higher density ink dot at a portion of image formed by the higher and lower density ink dots are expressed in terms of values of ODt and (ODn-ODt) divided by the number of pixels included the above region, respectively. Accordingly, by making the reflection density ODt to be approximately one half of the reflection density ODn, the granular appearance produced by the lower density ink dot at the highlighted portion and the granular appearance produced by the higher density ink dot at the portion where the higher density ink dots scattered in the lower density ink dots can be made substantially equal to each other. For this purpose, it is preferable that a dye concentration of the lower density ink is to be about one fourth of that of the higher density ink.

    • An image processing apparatus processes multivalued color image data that includes a plurality of color components. The apparatus includes an adding unit to add per-color-component quantization error values from a neighboring pixel to respective ones of a plurality of color components included in a pixel of interest, and a quantization unit to correlate a sum of the values of each of the color components to which the error value has been added by the adding unit to a sum of values after conversion, and deciding the value of each color component after conversion upon distributing the sum of pixel values after the conversion in accordance with the ratio of each of the color components before conversion. In addition, a coefficient decision unit decides diffusion coefficients, which diffuse quantization error to neighboring pixels, based upon the value of each of the plurality of color components included in the pixel of interest.

    • A printing apparatus and a print position aligning method are provided which can execute a dot position adjust value calculation mode normally and smoothly without requiring the user to make decisions or adjustments. A test pattern to check the width of a print medium is printed and is detected by an optical sensor to decide whether or not a dot position adjustment pattern can be printed. Before the dot position adjustment pattern is printed, a decision is made as to whether the print medium supplied is appropriate or not. If the print medium supplied is smaller than a size specified for the dot position adjust value calculation processing, the print medium is discharged without being printed with the dot position adjustment pattern. This eliminates a possibility of a wasteful consumption of print mediums and of contaminating the interior of the printing apparatus.

    • Two print heads combined for each ink color are arranged symmetric to each other with respect to the scan direction and are used for a bidirectional printing. In producing secondary colors, image data is spread-processed by using a “diagonal arrangement” spread pattern to differentiate the ink application order at one of dots arranged in the raster direction from those of the other dots and thereby reduce color variations in the scan direction. Further, when image data has a half-tone, a “horizontal arrangement” spread pattern, different from the previous one, is used to perform image processing on the image data to alleviate an undesired texture. To prevent a driving load from concentrating on only one of the paired print heads, the number of times that each nozzle is driven is counted and an adjustment is made to spread the frequency of use among the two paired print heads.
