    • A data processing system, implemented as programming on a suitably-programmed device includes a data input module that supplies a data input; and a wavelet transformation and compression module coupled to the data input module. The wavelet transformation and compression module receives a representation of the input data. The wavelet transformation and compression module includes an input module having a wavelet basis function, a wavelet coefficient generator that computes wavelet coefficients based on the wavelet basis function and the representation of the input data, a ranking module that orders the n wavelet coefficients, a coefficient multiplier that computes an energy value for each wavelet coefficient, an adder that iteratively computes cumulative energy as a function of the number of coefficients, and a comparator that computes total energy of the data input to the iterative, cumulative energy and selects a number of coefficients whose cumulative energy is substantially invariant with additional coefficients, wherein the selected number of coefficients results in compression of the data input.

    • To provide non-overlapping visualization of data points of a scatter plot, bins in a visualization screen are defined. The bins are defined along a first dimension by a first attribute of the data points, and along a second dimension by a second attribute of the data points. Cells representing corresponding data points in the bins are placed using a placement algorithm that positions the cells in the bins according to values of the first and second attributes of the corresponding data points. If the placement algorithm detects plural data points that have identical values of the first and second attributes, the placement algorithm groups the data points having the identical values in nearby positions surrounding a position corresponding to the identical values of the first and second attributes to avoid overlay of the data points having the identical values of the first and second attributes.

    • A method of producing a representation of the progress of a process being performed on a database may be embodied in a data processing system. The method may include obtaining for each of a plurality of subprocesses included in the database process an estimated rate of using a system resource during execution of the subprocess and an estimated volume of data to be processed. The actual rate of using the first system resource and the actual volume of data processed during execution of the at least one subprocess may be determined for at least one of the plurality of subprocesses. An output signal may be generated that is representative of the estimated and actual rates and the estimated and actual volumes of data for the at least one subprocess.
