    • A GPS receiver can periodically obtain range data without degrading the performance such as positioning sensitivity and positioning speed and conserve energy consumption. Supplied with IF data from a frequency conversion section 4, a synchronization hold section (6) acquires synchronization of a carrier frequency and phase synchronization of a C/A code, holds the acquired state, and obtains necessary information such as range data. When range data is obtained, a switch (23) is turned off to stop supplying the power to the synchronization hold section (6). A control section (7) executes a positioning operation using the obtained range data and the like, finds and outputs positioning information indicative of a current position. Thereafter, the switch (23) is turned on to restart the synchronization hold section (6). In this manner, control is provided to repeatedly start and stop the synchronization hold section (6).

    • A noise control apparatus has a thermal-type air flow meter for detecting engine load, an engine speed sensor for detecting engine speed, and an intake temperature sensor for detecting intake temperature. The engine load is detected based on the surging components of the signal from the air flow meter. An intake pipe is provided with a speaker that produces a noise control wave in accordance with a control signal from a controller. The controller has a memory that stores map data for noise control waves that are equal in sound pressure but opposite in phase with respect to intake noise. The map data regarding sound pressure and phase correspond to the engine load and speed on the basis of a reference temperature. A CPU of the controller computes a map-reading engine speed value based on a wavelength of intake noise that is determined based on intake temperature and engine speed, such that the map-reading engine speed value provides at the reference temperature substantially the same wavelength as that of the intake noise. The CPU generates a noise control wave signal based on the map-reading engine speed value and engine load information.

A control method for the recording apparatus alters the operational condition of the recording apparatus if the clearance has exceeded a certain preset value.

    • A flying head slider for supporting a magnetic head operative to transmit information into and out of a recording medium has a slider body having a surface to be disposed in faced relationship to the recording medium. Positive pressure generating portions are formed on the surface of the slider body to generate a positive pressure during rotation of the recording medium relative to the slider body. A bearing is formed in the fluid-inlet end of each positive pressure generating section to enhance a bearing action due to abrupt compression of fluid. A bleed slot is defined between the positive pressure generating sections and has a fluid-inlet end provided with a negative pressure generating means, whereby the slider stably floats a predetermined distance away from the recording medium during rotation thereof to enable the magnetic head to transmit information.
