    • A method of triggering a component in a distributed safety-related system, i.e., a component of an X-by-wire system in a motor vehicle, is described. The component is triggered by a process computer assigned to the component and connected to a communication system via a communications controller. A monitoring unit which is independent of the process computer is provided for monitoring the process computer. To simplify the configuration of such a safety-related system while at the same time at least retaining the safety that is achievable on enabling the components, the functions of the monitoring unit are executed by the communications controller. The communications controller may execute a question-and-answer communication with the process computer.

    • A method and communication system for exchanging data between at least two stations that are connected to one another via a distributed bus system, in which the data is contained in messages that are sent by the stations via the bus system. A common global time base, which at a predefinable instant is synchronized with an external reference time, and is provided for the stations of the bus system. To ensure reliable synchronization of the global time base with the external reference time, in particular without destroying the characteristics of the global time, (that is, without causing jumps in the global time base or a regressive global time), the stations of the communication system receive information regarding correction of the global time base, consent to a uniform correction value, and synchronously carry out external synchronization (that is, correction of the global time base).

    • A memory protection unit includes at least a first access control unit and a second access control unit programmed for controlling an access to a memory device. Further a method to operate a processing system comprising multiple processing devices and multiple memory protection units associated to the multiple processing devices. The access to the memory by a processing device is approved if first access control unit and second access control unit of the memory protection associated to the processing device approves the access and access is rejected if first access control unit or second access control unit rejects the access. The first access control unit is programmable by the associated processing device alone and the programming of the second access control unit is readable by an additional processing device which is to be used in a system with multiple programming devices, not the associate processing device.

    • A shunt resistor includes: two measuring terminals for applying a measuring current flowing through the shunt resistor along a main flow direction; slot structures dividing the shunt resistor along the main flow direction to include two side flow areas of respective first widths and a main flow area of a second width; and two calibration terminals connected to the side flow areas. A circuit connected to the measuring terminals is designed to detect, and generate a signal based on, a measuring current flowing through the shunt resistor. A calibration device connected to the calibration terminals is designed to apply a reference voltage or current to the calibration terminals, and ascertain a calibration voltage based on a falling voltage across those terminals. A correction circuit connected to the calibration device and the detection circuit is designed to correct the signal generated by the detection circuit based on the detected calibration voltage.
