    • Methods, apparatus and computer program products are provided to facilitate the acquisition of radio recourses when an initial redirect attempt to acquire the necessary resources fails. The disclosed embodiments enable the determination as to whether or not a desired service is available on a target set of radio resources. Upon the failure to acquire the service, a preferential search of additional radio resources is conducted for acquisition of the service. The disclosed concepts are applicable to a variety of technologies, such as UMTS, GSM, 3GPP WCDMA and LTE, 3GPP2 1xRTT and HRPD, WLAN, WiMAX, DSL and passive optical network (PON).     • Systems and methodologies are described that handle security activation during handover in a wireless network. A new access stratum (AS) key can be provided to a serving access point (and a related wireless device) before and/or while preparing a target access point during an inter-cell handover. The serving access point can receive the new AS key and provide it to the target access point as part of handover preparation. The serving access point can then initiate inter-cell handover of the related wireless device indicating that the wireless device can utilize a new AS key before the serving access point has an opportunity to activate the new AS key with the wireless device. The wireless device can subsequently perform a random access procedure to the target access point and/or establish a connection therewith by transmitting other messages using the new AS key.

    • Systems and methodologies are described herein that facilitate cell barring based on erroneous messages received within a wireless communication system. As described herein, in the event that a device fails to receive and/or decode respective messages transmitted from a network cell over a common communication channel, the device can implement one or more error handling procedures as described herein to reselect away from the network cell and/or a frequency associated with the network cell (e.g., as if the network cell was explicitly barred). Cell barring can be triggered as described herein based on a count of erroneous messages (e.g., consecutive messages, messages received within a predetermined time window, etc.), elapsed time between erroneous messages, or the like. Further, cell barring can be performed as described herein based on failure to acquire pre-scheduled system information, common system information determined to have invalid abstract syntax, or the like.
