摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion shift optical fiber of substantialy single mode of which bending loss satisfys a condition of 100 dB/m or less of bending loss, capable of enlarging sufficiently an effective core cross-sectional area (Aeff) and capable of reducing a dispersion slope. SOLUTION: This optical fiber is a dispersion shift optical fiber having a refractive index distributuion shape that a peripheral core part having a refractive index higher than that of a center core part is provided on an outer circumference of the center core part, and that a clad having a refractive index lower than that of the peripheral core part is provided on an outer circumference of the peripharal core part. In this fiber adjusted are a specific refractive index difference Δ1 of the center core part using the refractive index of the clad as a refernce, a specific refractive index difference Δ2 of the peripheral part when the refractive index of the clad is used as a reference, a radius r1 of the center core and a radius r2 of the peripheral core part.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the characteristics in a region where deposition grows initially in a stage for producing a porous glass body by a VAD(vapor axial deposition) method. SOLUTION: While a target rod 12 is rotated by a rotary pulling up device 13, this target rod is pulled up and the glass particulates formed from burners 16, 17 are deposited at the bottom end thereof to form the porous glass body 11. The base of a chamber 14 is provided with an IR transparent observation window 15 and the heat image reflected by a mirror 22 is picked up by an IR radiation thermometer 21. The central position of the core part is determined with a computer by this image signal and a burner driving device 24 is controlled according to thereto, by which the position relation between the burner 16 for the core and the core part of the porous glass body 11 is maintained always constant.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent a stoppage of measurement due to bubbles or the like contained in an optical fiber preform by providing a monitoring device of an output of a photodetector. CONSTITUTION:In a normal measurement, an output of a photodetector 28 detected with a motor 40 is repeated in high and low levels at a fixed interval depending on whether a laser light is intercepted with a chopper. Based on the information thus obtained, a computer 34 judges that the measurement proceeds normally and operates according to a program determined. But when the laser light fails to enter the photodetector 28 because of bubbles in an optical fiber preform the output of the photodetector 28 remains at the low level. Based on the information thus obtained, the computer 34 judges an error to occur from the output of the monitor 40 which does not turn to the high level when a fixed time passes even after it switches over to the low level from the high level. Then, the measurement of the preform is suspended according to the program determined and a shift is made to the measurement of the subsequent preform 10.

In this case, the non-effective part 23 in shrinkage fitting state is formed by controlling the temp. of the soot surface to the same temp. as the temp. of the soot surface at the time of forming the effective part.

Many exhaust ports 31 are arranged in an array-like shape along the traverse direction of the burner 21 in the chamber 11, and practical exhaust gas flow volumes for the respective exhaust ports are measured. The preliminarily determined optimal exhaust pattern data for the various positions of the burner are held, and a computer 41 controls the exhaust gas flow volumes of the respective exhaust ports 31 in response to the positions of the burner 31 and to the flow volume measured at each exhaust gas port 31 on the basis of the data.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily know a hole diameter, a hole position, hole surface roughness, and bending loss, etc., of an optical fiber with a hole without cutting the optical fiber with the hole when measuring the hole diameter of the optical fiber with the hole.SOLUTION: Two-directional OTDR measurement is carried out in which reference optical fibers 2 are connected to both ends of an optical fiber 3 with the hole respectively and measurement light beams are made incident from both ends of the connected optical fiber 2 to measure back-scattered light beams. An arithmetic mean value lref at a part of the reference optical fibers 2 and an arithmetic mean value lhf(x) at a position (x) of the optical fiber 3 with the hole are calculated from two obtained back-scattered light waveforms, and a difference (Ihf-Iref) ΔI between the arithmetic mean value lhf and arithmetic mean value lref is found. Based upon the correlation between the found difference ΔI and the hole diameter of the optical fiber 3 with the hole, the hole diameter, the hole position, the surface roughness of the hole, and the bending loss at the position (x) are found.
