    • Using an M:N variable matrix, M audio input signals, each associated with a direction, are translated to N audio output signals, each associated with a direction, wherein N is larger than M, M is two or more and N is a positive integer equal to three or more. The variable matrix is controlled in response to measures of: (1) the relative levels of the input signals, and (2) the cross-correlation of the input signals so that a soundfield generated by the output signals has a compact sound image in the nominal ongoing primary direction of the input signals when the input signals are highly correlated, the image spreading from compact to broad as the correlation decreases and progressively splitting into multiple compact sound images, each in a direction associated with an input signal, as the correlation continues to decrease to highly uncorrelated.

    • A lane maintenance machine has a cleaning system that includes at least one cleaning liquid dispensing head which reciprocates back and forth transversely of the lane as the machine travels along the length of the lane. In a preferred embodiment the dispensing head emits successive squirts of liquid from a positive displacement pump, such as a peristaltic pump. The positive displacement pump provides accurate, precise metering of the cleaning liquid and affords board-by-board control of the dispensing action. A wiping assembly immediately behind the cleaning liquid dispensing head provides a web of cloth-like material looped under a compressible backup roller to wipe the applied liquid into a thin film and to pick up a measure of the liquid along with oil and dirt. A vacuum squeegee pickup head trailing the wiping assembly lifts the remaining film of cleaning liquid completely off the lane surface, whereupon lane dressing is applied at the rear of the machine utilizing a dressing dispensing head that, like the cleaning liquid dispensing head, reciprocates transversely of the lane to dispense dressing in a pattern preselected by the operator.

    • Systems and methods of processing branch instructions provide for a bimodal predictor and a plurality of global predictors. The bimodal predictor is coupled to a prediction selector, where the bimodal predictor generates a bimodal prediction for branch instructions. The plurality of global predictors is coupled to the prediction selector, where each global predictor generates a corresponding global prediction for a branch instruction using different history or stew lengths. The prediction selector selects branch predictions from the bimodal prediction and the global predictions in order to arbitrate between predictors. The arbitration, update, and allocation schemes are designed to choose the most accurate predictor for each branch. Lower level predictors are used as filters to increase effective predictor capacity. Allocate and update schemes minimize aliasing between predictors. Branch predictors incorporating a plurality of global predictors in this fashion are more adaptive than conventional predictors with fixed branch history lengths and are able to achieve superior accuracy.

    • A pivotal ball joint assembly includes a ball joint, an input/output member, and a secondary seal element to prevent contamination of the boot seal during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint. The ball joint has a socket body and a ball stud pivotally mounted to the socket body. The ball stud has a shank portion which extends therefrom and is aligned along a shank axis. An elastic boot seal which extends between the ball stud and socket body is also included. The pivotal ball joint assembly also includes an input/output member affixed to the ball stud shank portion so that the socket body is able to freely rotate relative to the input/output shaft about the shank axis. The pivotal ball joint assembly is further rotatable through a limited range about a transverse axis perpendicular to the shank axis. The secondary seal element extends between the boot seal and the input/output member to guard the boot seal to shank portion interface against contamination during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint.

    • A set of stream writer and reader classes and methods enable object frameworks to communicate with each other despite problems with missing classes due to mismatched versions. The stream writers are modified to deal with a new version of a class that extends from a class in an existing version by writing alternate object information compatible with the existing version when the future object class information is streamed. In this manner, alternate object information is written for each older version. The information for each of the alternate objects corresponding to each older version is added after the existing object information as an extension with the length of the extension written at the beginning. The stream readers are modified so that when an older version stream reader reads the object information and does not understand the first alternate object (which might correspond to a later version), it skips the length specified for that extension and reads the second alternate object. If the second alternate object information is not understood, the reader skips the non-understood object information and continues with each alternate object. If none of the alternates is understood, then an exception is thrown. In one embodiment, the information for alternate objects which are not used is not discarded, but is instead saved in a temporary storage. Then, if the object is streamed out again, the stored information is added back into the stream.
