摘要： A system for broadcasting television signals transmits both encrypted program content and access control data over a satellite system to be received by a number of individual receivers, each of which has registered with the program provider by providing a public cryptographic key and hash codes representing the serial numbers of critical components within the receiver. The access control data, which is addressed to an individual receiver, includes data encrypted with the public key of the receiver, indicating the program content to be decrypted by the receiver using its private key. Whenever the receiver is powered on, the hash codes are generated and stored to ensure the components have not been changed. Each transmission from the receiver to the program provider is validated by checking the hash codes.

摘要： An apparatus, system, and process are disclosed for dynamically determining a best network service for an electronic computing device. A network query module queries two or more active networks to determine the network characteristics, such as bandwidth, security level, and cost, of each network. A service level module determines a service level associated with each active network. The service level is determined based on an algorithm using the network characteristics of each network. A best network module determines the best network from the active networks based on the service levels of each network, and a network connection module dynamically connects the electronic computing device to the best network. The network selection apparatus may also maintain and use a profile module to store default, user-defined, application, and network profiles. A dynamic switching module may dynamically switch between active networks as the service levels of individual networks are re-evaluated and the network characteristics of each network change.

摘要： Hacking a rental computer to use it beyond purchased rental time is prevented by plugging a time card with internal counter into a DIMM socket of the motherboard and encrypting the register locations of the time card with the private key of the motherboard to bind the time card to the motherboard. Thus, if the time card is not detected at boot or if it is removed during operation the computer is disabled. The counter counts down the rented time period as it receives clocking signals, and at the elapse of the purchased period disables the computer.
