    • A liquid crystal display device (10) includes an upper substrate (12), a lower substrate (14) and a liquid crystal layer (16) interposed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate. A plurality of pixel regions, each pixel region comprising a pixel electrode and a common electrode (148a, 148b), for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. Each pixel region includes a reflection region and a transmission region; and all the pixel and common electrodes are positioned at either the upper substrate or the lower substrate. The display working both in reflection mode and transmission mode has a wide view angle.

    • A reflective LCD device (20) includes a first substrate (21) and a second substrate (22). A liquid crystal layer (25) having liquid crystal molecules is interposed between the first and second substrates. The liquid crystal molecules are bend-aligned to cause the reflective liquid crystal display device to operate in an optically compensated bend (OCB) mode. A first alignment layer (231) and a second alignment (232) layer are respectively disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the first and second substrates. One or more retardation films and a compensation layer can compensate for color, with the compensation layer also improving the viewing angle. This helps ensure that the reflective LCD device provides a good quality display image. In addition, the alignment and a pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules ensure that the liquid crystal molecules realign in a very short time upon a change in a driving electric field.

    • An LCD device (10) includes a first substrate (22), a second substrate (21), and a liquid crystal layer (23) having liquid crystal molecules interposed between the first and second substrates. A pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules is in the range from 0° to 15°. A first upper retardation film (521) is disposed at an outer surface of the first substrate. Preferably, the first upper retardation film is a quarter-wave plate. A first lower retardation film (511) is disposed at an outer surface of the second substrate. Preferably, the first lower retardation film is a quarter-wave plate. This helps ensure that the LCD device provides a good quality display. In addition, the alignment and the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer are such that the liquid crystal molecules are homogeneously aligned when this is needed, and can be twisted in a very short time.
