    • Techniques for sending control messages are described. In an aspect, assignment messages may be acknowledged based on either linked or dedicated acknowledgement (ACK) resources. A terminal may receive an assignment message from a base station, determine whether to acknowledge the assignment message, and determine ACK resources to use to acknowledge the assignment message. The ACK resources may be linked to a control block on which the assignment message was received, linked to resources given by the assignment message, or assigned to the terminal. The terminal may send the acknowledgement on the ACK resources. In another aspect, a control message may be acknowledged based on ACK resources determined based on the control message or the control block. The ACK resources may be linked to resources assigned by the control message or linked to the control message. The terminal may send an acknowledgement for the control message on the ACK resources.

    • Softer handoff groups are provided utilizing fractional frequency reuse set, which can be managed by a single master sector that is part of the group. The group can based on handoff rules that can include a group indication by an access point or a group request by an access terminal. A terminal is provided functionality to select a softer handoff group, which can be indicated by an active set update. An access point can discontinue serving terminals by groups by reducing an active set size to one. Diversity can be provided such that if a transmission from one sector fades, the other sector can provide the transmission, mitigating loss of data. Thus, robustness against inadequate channel conditions can be obtained.

    • Embodiments describe a varied transmission time interval in wireless communication system. According to some embodiments is a method for assigning a transmission time interval. The method can include measuring a channel condition and/or a data rate of packet communicated by at least one wireless device. Based in part on the data rate and/or channel condition information, a determination can be made whether to schedule a long transmission time interval or a short transmission time interval to the packet. A long transmission time interval can be scheduled if the channel condition is poor and/or there is a low data rate. A short transmission time interval can be scheduled if the channel condition is good and/or the data rate is high or fast. The method can be repeated for multiple wireless devices. Also included is an alternative interlacing structure that supports both long transmission time intervals and short transmission time intervals.
