摘要： PURPOSE: A herbal composition containing 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid and vanillic acid from a Radix Trichosanthis extract as an effective ingredient is provided. It has excellent inhibitory activity on the decomposition of articular cartilage tissue and an inhibiting effect on the expression activity of an articular cartilage tissue-decomposing enzyme and is thus useful as an agent for protecting articular cartilage tissue. CONSTITUTION: A herbal composition contains 0.02 to 0.3% by weight of 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid and 0.02 to 0.3% by weight of vanillic acid as an indicating material, obtained from a Radix Trichosanthis extract, wherein Radix Trichosanthis is extracted 10 to 15 times of water or aqueous lower alcohol solution and filtered. Then, the residue is heated 7 to 12 times with water or aqueous lower alcohol solution and filtered.

Ricinus communis L. is extracted in water under reflux and filtered, the extracted residue is added with water, heated and filtered to produce a filtrate, which is concentrated under reduced pressure after performing the layer separation of the filtrate with water-saturated lower alcohol to produce an extract or powder of Ricinus communis L.
