In a hydraulic pit prop having a relief valve 40, a retraction spring 7 and a combined release and filler valve 13, 15, pressure fluid is adapted to flow at high speed in both directions over the sealing surfaces of the valve 13, 15 during both filling and discharging thereby clearing some of dirt particles. Pressure fluid is fed to the prop by a setting pistol, see Fig. 2 (not shown) introduced to a valve unit 17 which is rotatably mounted in the prop member 4 but axially constrained therein by a rod 18 engaging an annular groove on the unit 17. The pressure fluid is fed through the unit 17 and the valve 13, 15 to a passage 6a communicating with a tube 5 leading to the working chamber (not shown). A drawing key 34 see also Fig. 4 (not shown) may be mounted on the unit 17 to rotate same thereby actuating the release valve by means of a sliding block 25.

[Also in Divisions E1, F1 and F2] A mechanical force amplifying means, which is applied to an embossing or stamping press, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a vice, Fig. 6 (not shown), and a chucking fixture for machine tools, Fig. 8 (not shown), comprises relatively rotatable pressure plates 1, 2 each formed with two concentric tracks inclined to a plane transverse to the axis, and balls or rollers located between corresponding tracks and extending 180 degrees therearound, the arrangement being such that on relative rotation of the plates 1, 2, relative axial movement of the plates 1, 2 also occurs. An intermediate pressure-plate 7, Fig. 3 (not shown), having balls on each side thereof may be arranged between plates 1, 2. When the top pressure-plate 1 has turned through one revolution, a dog 8 strikes a stop element 9 and entrains the central pressure-plate 7 during the next revolution. Locking means such as a freewheel ratchet may be provided to prevent backrunning of one disc under the applied pressure. On release of the locking means, the return to the original position may be assisted by spring means.

In a friction-type pit prop having relatively slidable inner and outer prop members 1, 5 and a clamp 2 to hold them in any required relative axial position, a cylinder tube 11 is arranged coaxially within the outer member 5 to leave an annular gap 16 between the member 5 and itself, which communicates with a filler cap 10 for pressure fluid on the member 5, immediately below the clamp 2, and with the inside of the tube 11 through apertures 17 at the bottom thereof, and the inner prop member 1 has a piston 13 therein. The cylinder tube 11 is detachable from the prop member 5, its upper end being a sealing fit in an annular collar 4 carried by the member 5, and its lower end bearing against a base plate 7 detachably secured to the bottom of the member 5 by means of pins 8 engaging in bores partly in a ring 6 attached to the member 5 and in the plate 7, a sealing ring 9 intervening between the ring 6 and plate 7. The clamp 2 is secured to the collar 4.
