    • An optical deflector device including a substrate having a thermo-optic effect, a two-dimensional optical waveguide formed on a surface of the substrate, for guiding a light beam therethrough, so as to trap the light beam in a direction of thickness of the substrate, and a device for producing a temperature gradient in the two-dimensional optical waveguide in a direction which is parallel to a plane of the substrate and which intersects the direction of propagation of the light beam through the optical waveguide. Also disclosed is an optical deflector device including a solid deflector element for deflecting a light beam, and an incident-angle changing device for progressively changing an angle of incidence of the light beam upon the solid deflector element. The incident-angle changing device includes a plurality of optical waveguides which are arranged so as to guide the light beam to the solid deflector element. The angle of incidence of the light beam upon the solid deflector element differs depending upon the optical waveguides through which the light beam is selectively guided to the solid deflector element.

    • An optical deflector for deflecting a light beam within a predetermined range of angle, including a substrate having an electro-optical effect, a three-dimensional waveguide formed on one of opposite surfaces of the substrate, to guide waves of the light beam therethrough, and plural pairs of deflector electrodes. The waveguide includes a main path, and a plurality of branch paths diverging from the main path at respective branching portions of the waveguide. The branch paths are angled with respect to the main path so as to cover the predetermined range of angle. Each pair of deflector electrodes is disposed at a corresponding one of the branching portions of the three-dimensional waveguide, in order to produce an electric field locally at the corresponding branching portion of the waveguide, and thereby deflect the light beam from the main path into a corresponding one of the plurality of branch paths, due to the electro-optical effect upon selective application of a voltage between the deflector electrodes.

    • An optical deflector including a waveguide which has an electrooptic effect and which is adapted to guide rays of light therethrough. The deflector comprises a deflector portion having deflection electrodes disposed on a portion of the waveguide and spaced apart in a selected direction intersecting a direction of propagation of the light. The deflector further comprises a controller for applying deflection voltages to the deflection electrodes to establish a distribution of refractive index of the above-indicated portion of the waveguide in the above selected direction. The controller periodically changes the deflection voltages to vary the refractive index distribution, thereby deflecting the light passing through the waveguide. The waveguide may be formed on a surface of a substrate made of an electrooptic material. The substrate may have a converging portion including convergence electrodes disposed on another portion of the waveguide, to converge the rays of light deflected by the deflector portion, convergence voltages to be applied to the convergence electrodes being varied according to an angle of deflection of the rays, to permit the convergence of the rays on a surface of an object irrespective of the deflection angle.
