Coating-machines.-Relates to machines for making and filling circular paper boxes, and particularly to devices for gumming the inside of the bodies for the attachment of the bottom and top closures. The bodies are fed down a shoot 14, Fig. 2, and are pasted at the bottom by a circular brush 16 inserted through an opening in the shoot. The bottles pass on to bottleholders 6, Fig. 1, on a belt 5, and are carried beneath a reciprocating device 2 for inserting bottom closures, a filling-device 12, a top-pasting device 42, and a device 3 for inserting top closures. The brush 16 is carried by a rod 19, Fig. 2, passing loosely through a pivoted sleeve 20, and is reciprocated between the adhesivereceptacle 33 and the opening in the shoot by a bell-crank lever and a connecting-rod 29. The opening in the shoot is surrounded by a series of hinged plates, which hold back the bristles of the brush during the insertion into the bottle body, and which spring back and allow the bristles to contact with the body during the withdrawal. The brush consists preferably of separate sections arranged radially. The top pasting device consists of a circular brush 41, Fig. 1, at the bottom of an adhesive receptacle 42 adapted to be rotated and to be reciprocated vertically simultaneously with the device 3 for inserting the top closures. Perforations in the brush allow the adhesive to percolate to the bristles.

Paper pipes and tubes.-Mandrels especially adapted for the manufacture of non-circular spirally-wound tubes, in which the winding is performed by an endless belt 4 taking a turn round a rotatably-mounted mandrel, are provided with antifriction devices at that part encompassed by the belt. These are preferably in the form of barrel - shaped rollers 103, mounted with their axes transverse to the travel of the belt, housed in and slightly projecting from recesses in flat plates 106 secured in grooves in the mandrel by screws. The mandrel may be polygonal in cross-section, and is preferably hollow. To ensure the strip of material being fed at a constant distance from the belt, a spiral guide 110 is secured to a clip 111 through which the belt travels.

摘要： 10,179. Jenkins, C. F. April 29. Paper pipes and tubes -Relates to machines for making paper or like tubes by helically winding strips of material. The strips of material 9 are passed through a glueing- device 10 and are wound by an endless belt 4 taking a turn round a mandrel 6. The belts are adjustable in the known way. The advancing end of the finished tube engages a stop 65 carried by a sliding and oscillating frame 39 having suitable cutters, whereby the frame and cutters advance at the same rate as the tube during the cutting operation, after which they are automatically returned. The usual circular saw is replaced by a plurality of disk cutters, (three are shown), two of which 37, 38 are carried on an arm pivoted at 42 to the frame 39, the third 36 being carried by a pivoted arm 43 adjustable by means of a screw 46. The frame 39 is oscillated to move the cutters into and away from the cutting position by cams 58, 60 engaging arms 59, 61 on the frame 39 of a width equal to the longitudinal travel of the frame. The cams are carried by a shaft 55 driven through a friction clutch 56 of ordinary construction. The movements of the shaft and cams are controlled by pivoted detents 62, 70 held in the path of pins 63, 68 on the shaft 55 by a spring 76, and respectively released at the required instants by adjustable fingers 67, 71 carried by the frame 39. The finger 67 yields to allow passage of the detent 62 on the return movement of the frame 39, which is accomplished by a spring 73. Antifriction balls 74 working in suitable races in hubs 75 are provided to facilitate movements of the frame 39. The mandrel 6 is hollow and contains a sliding and rotating shaft 30 provided with a disk 31 to support the tube against the pressure of the cutters 36, 37, 38, which is sufficient to cause the disk to advance with the tube and cutters, against the tension of springs 34 provided to return the disk after the cutting operation.

Paper pipes and tubes.- Relates to apparatus for making spirally-wound tubes without a mandrel, the place of which is taken by a foundation layer of material formed into a tube by passage through ring dies 132, 133. This strip is drawn from a spool 121, mounted in a fork 120 rotated by gear-wheels 117, 118 at the same rate as the tube rotates under the action of the endless winding-belt 131, which takes a turn round the tube and spirally winds an outer strip of material drawn from a spool 135. Rollers 138 support the finished tube against the tension of the belt. The tube is cut into lengths by a saw 141 driven by an electric motor mounted on an arm 145 with a gimbal 'joint 146. The saw advances with the tube during the cutting operation and is after wards returned, its movements being controlled by a cam 142 and spring 143.
